The number of Tweets last night exceeded the world population, passing 6.8 billion Twitter messages posted. Mashable reader Liz Pullen estimates this happened at around midnight or 1 a.m. EST this morning. The stats below, pulled from Twitter tracking tool GigaTweet and the World Population Clock, show the Twitter count surpassing the world population count.

Last month MSNBC acquired the Twitter account @BreakingNews and its 1.4 million followers, and today, the news network is taking the concept a step further by buying the enviable domain name BreakingNews.com.

MSNBC plans to develop the website as a compliment to the feed, with more reporting and story updates than you currently get from Twitter. Currently the domain name, which was bought from PV Media Group, is nothing more than a more nicely styled Twitter feed. Charles Tillinghast, president of the MSNBC Digital Network, said in a statement: “Hard and fast breaking news is currently an underserved market. With www.breakingnews.com we can now provide the optimal solution. " The company says it plans to continue to build the BreakingNews brand in the same way that’s made it successful thus far, which is both by being exceptionally fast, but also by linking to any source that breaks news first — including MSNBC competitors.
