Social Skills Resources — Therapy OPS. Video modeling is an integral part of Therapy OPS's social skills groups. It is one on the most effective ways of teaching social skills and other positive behaviors for individuals on the Autism spectrum. While there are videos out there for purchase, we have always preferred using our own video collection.

We try to choose age appropriate TV shows and videos that the participants enjoy and are motivated by. The videos often show an example of the "expected" and "unexpected" behaviors, to which we then pause and discuss with the group. It is our goal to have several examples for each topic listed below; however this might take some time. Once you start tuning in to the idea of video modeling while watching shows and movies, you will notice that one episode or movie can be used as a teaching tool for many skills. Therapy OPS word of Caution: Use caution when using some of these clips, as not all are appropriate for every age/maturity level. Apologizing Video Models Body Language. Brain body in group. One of my favorite things to do with my young friends is to watch people. We do this at school, at home and when we are on outings. Quite often the children that we work with are overwhelmed in busy environments so paying attention to other people can be challenging.

I have found that it is best to isolate this skill in order for the child to be able to focus. So we created an emotions scavenger hunt. I tell the child that the only thing that we will be doing is watching people; we can relax and not worry about doing anything else. Taking the time out to sit and make observations is an extremely valuable use of time and attention. This post contains affiliate links.

How to Run a Social Skills Group Many of our children with language delays also have trouble with social skills.

This may be due to certain conditions that impair social skills, like autism, or it may just be because these children have trouble learning language and social interactions rely heavily on language skills. Whatever the cause, one of the best ways to help improve social skills is through the use of social skills groups. Doing social skills training in a group setting allows children to practice new skills with their peers instead of just talking about them theoretically.

Practice is crucial for these children to actually be able to use those skills in real life. However, knowing exactly how to run a social skills group can be tricky. Two Truths and a Lie is a very old game which has been popularised on radio and television over the years. This version makes a simple ice breaker game for older children, who will enjoy trying to fool the other kids. How to play: You may want to give everyone a pencil and paper to help them plan and remember their "two truths and a lie", but it isn't necessary.

One child starts by telling the group two truths and one lie about himself, in any order. He must try to mix them up and use a "poker face" so that all three could be believable "truths". The other children try to guess which was the lie. This is probably easiest done by a show of hands. An example: A 10 year old boy states: "I am 11 year's old. Variation - Two Truths and a Wish: Replace the lie with a wish or goal.
