A big problem I've run into lately during coaching conversations is an addiction we pretty much all share: the addiction to being right. What this particular addiction does is to convince you that it feels good to know more, be better than or to be right more often than others. As is true in all addictions though, the cost is eventually more than you might be willing to pay. The cost is a negative outlook, frustration, an overload of judgment and can start that back of the brain voice working overtime! If you don't think this is a true addiction then I challenge you to go a week, even a day, without it. Try spending a day not criticizing someone else, having the last word, smirking or going, "tsk," judging or prejudging, or in any other way type casting others.
Try it; even just one day. Trust me, it's an addiction; I know I'm right! Join the conversation here: Is Being Right an Addiction? Readjusting your information diet. Image by from a second story (license). “One of the effects of living with electric information is that we live habitually in a state of information overload. There’s always more than you can cope with.”Marshall McLuhan “Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.”Gertrude Stein “Our thoughts create our reality — where we put our focus is the direction we tend to go.”Peter McWilliams During the last few years I have cut down on and readjust much of the information I bring into my life.
I don’t own a TV. I didn’t use to be that way. Well, here are five compelling reasons to take a look at your own information intake and perhaps do some trimming and readjusting. 1. There can be quite a bit of fear in, for instance, what you read in the paper or see on the news. However, most of the things we fear in our minds never really seem to come into reality. 2. 3. Otherwise you may be working on your personal growth, say for an hour each day. 4. 5. Better life tips. Reading tips from the Internet, I got this useful list where I personally follow some of it to help me sort of improve my day to day life. Read through it and just follow the things you want to believe. Remember, each person has his/her own needs/wants/beliefs.
Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. You don’t have to win every argument. Use your subconscious to change. “Never go to sleep without a request to your subconscious.” – Thomas Edison Your subconscious loves to do work while your body performs other tasks that are easy. I can prove this very easily by asking you how many good ideas you have had while driving or in the shower. When you are relaxed yet slightly distracted, your mind is often at its best. Using subconscious requests will… Improve your motivation.Help you become happier.Increase your emotional intelligence. You’ll see improvement in less than a month. My last request was… “Please give me more patience when commuting to work and allow me to even enjoy my time in the car.” Within a month I was enjoying my ride to work.
My latest request is… “Let’s find creative ways to grow my blog.” I took this approach because it’s going to take a request to my subconscious and action in my waking life to make this happen. Mindset My mindset is changing by setting my subconscious on a certain issue. The 3 step request only takes five minutes: 8 things to stop doing. The main purpose of this site is to help you be who you want to be and live the life you want to live. I think everyone deserves that at the bare minimum, and I believe that everyone can achieve it. Therefore, a lot of the messages that I share here are positive, inspiring and action orientated. With this post I want to change direction, and not cover the things you should be doing, but the things you shouldn't be doing.
I'm not even going to be half-hearted about it and say you should 'probably' stop doing these things or 'you can if you want'. No; you really should stop, right now. Photo Credit I truly believe that successful implementation, or actually 'de-implementation' of these methods will dramatically improve a number of things. What I mean by improving your awareness is that you actually might 'wake up' to some of the things you've been doing, and understand exactly why I say you need to stop doing these things immediately. 1. 2.
“Why do some people have all the luck?” 3. 4. 5. 6. Transforming habits. By Celes on Jun 9, 2009 | ShareThis Email This Post Have you ever thought of introducing a good habit into your life, but never got around to doing it? Perhaps you tried it for 1-2 days, but then lacked the discipline to continue afterward. Perhaps you are overwhelmed by the effort required to institute it into your life and never got around to doing it.
Perhaps your attempts keep getting thwarted by other activities. In comes the 21-Day Trial Program . The 21-Day Trial is not just limited to developing good habits – it can also be used to break off bad habits. This is one of my favorite self improvement tools because it is simply so effective. Why 21 days? The 21-Day Trial is inspired by Steve Pavlina’s 30-Day Trial and it’s a modified version of it. 21 days is what it takes to fully break/form a new habit. Benefits of this trial There are several very attractive benefits of this 21-day trial. 1. 2. Since it’s a trial program, there is no commitment required beyond the 21 days. 3. 4. 1. 2. Smart questions. One of the most effective ways to achieve success is to ask yourself the right questions.
When we ask ourselves a question, we always come up with an answer. Ask yourself “Why does this always happen to me,” and you’ll get an answer. But if you ask yourself “How can I have a great day today,” you’ll also get an answer. Which answer is going to empower you more? You got it. So why not ask yourself smart questions that will make you happier, more confident, more powerful, and more successful? The world moves fast, our many interests are constantly being seduced by TV, the Web, and the omnipotent presence of marketing.
My recommendation is to take your favorite 5-10 questions from this list, write them down and post them near your desk, your bathroom mirror, the visor in your car and on the back of your cellphone. The other way to use these questions is to take one question per day or per week. Questions: What do I want to accomplish today? What are your favorite empowering questions? K. 39 ways to live. “The proper function of man is to live – not to exist.” — Jack LondonToo often we go through life on autopilot, going through the motions and having each day pass like the one before it.That’s fine, and comfortable, until you have gone through another year without having done anything, without having really lived life. That’s fine, until you have reached old age and look back on life with regrets.
That’s fine, until you see your kids go off to college and realize that you missed their childhoods. It’s not fine. If you want to truly live life, to really experience it, to enjoy it to the fullest, instead of barely scraping by and only living a life of existence, then you need to find ways to break free from the mold and drink from life. What follows is just a list of ideas, obvious ones mostly that you could have thought of yourself, but that I hope are useful reminders. Do you want to be happy or do you want to wallow in bad feelings? 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. What’s the craziest thing you ever did to cheer up yourself or someone else? Written for Dumb Little Man by K. 32 keys about life. 4 mental foibles. As human beings, we have a natural wish to improve ourselves, and are always looking for ways to be more efficient, focused and fulfilled.
However, we also have the opposite tendency to cherish certain limitations that prevent us from achieving these exact things! Let’s go into four of these limitations in detail.1. Imagining the worst possible future. When something bad happens, our mind often has a tendency to compound it by projecting forward into the future and imagining the worst thing that could happen as a result. Such a course of action can be very tempting, especially if we can portray ourselves as a victim and wallow in self-pity as a result. A very influential psychological model developed by Weiner et al. in the 1970’s suggested that the happiest people are those who see bad things that happen to them as impermanent and changeable events rather than situations that are going to persist forever. 2. 3. 4.
Difficult people. Labier - empathy deficit. It's possible for an entire culture to develop shared forms of mental disturbance. As socially shared pathologies increase, they can be difficult to recognize; they become the norm. Such is the case today, and a prime example is what I call our national Empathy Deficit Disorder, or EDD. I made the name up, so don't go looking for it in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Actually, I'm hesitant to suggest a new disorder, given that our mental health professions increasingly define normal variations of mood and temperament as new "disorders" (for which Big Pharma is ready to supply "treatments"). But this one's real. It's become pervasive throughout our increasingly polarized social and political culture of the past several years.
EDD has profound consequences for the mental health of individuals and society. For example, in troubled intimate relationships, when partners become locked into adversarial and oppositional positions. The single biggest advantage I’ve had in my life is that I’ve largely been surrounded by supportive people. My wife, my parents, my closest friends – all of them have always been incredibly positive towards everything I’ve ever chosen to do. My mind continually goes back to the period in my life where I was trying to convince myself to make the leap into being a full-time writer. Rather than saying it’s something I couldn’t do or shouldn’t do, all of them encouraged me to do it when I decided the time was right. Yes, they offered me input. Some of it was definitely constructive criticism. That made all the difference in the world in my decision to become a writer and a much more present father.
