Seals, Sea Lions & Walrus. Red Lion Fish. 10-Year Sea Census. Photograph courtesy A. Fifis, IFREMER Its fuzzy, winter-white coat might look at home in the Himalaya, but the yeti crab was discovered skittering around hydrothermal vents about a mile and a half (2.4 kilometers) under the South Pacific off Easter Island (map) in March 2005. The 6-inch (15-centimeter), blind crustacean—officially Kiwa hirsuta— is among the more than 6,000 new species discovered during the Census of Marine Life , a ten-year effort to document all sea life that concluded Monday.

(See "Six-hundred-year-Old Worms Among Surprises of Ten-year Sea Survey. " ) The project's 500-plus expeditions have also amassed a visual legacy as unique as the organisms uncovered—from which National Geographic News has selected these images as the 13 best of the census. Giant Squid

But, of course, all of it is much larger! FEEDING TENTACLESGiant squid can snatch prey up to 33 feet (10 meters) away by shooting out their two feeding tentacles, which are tipped with hundreds of powerful sharp-toothed suckers. These feeding tentacles are very long, often doubling the total length of the giant squid on their own. ARMS AND BEAKEight thick arms speckled with 2-inch wide toothed suckers guide prey from the feeding tentacles to a sharp beak in the center of the arms, where the prey is sliced into bite-sized pieces.

These bites are further cut and ground by the radula, a tongue-like organ covered with rows of teeth, that is inside the squid's beak. Australian Sam had been taking part in a Great White tagging trip when he found himself face-to-face with the deadly predator off the Neptune Islands, South Australia. Tough customer: This bad-tempered shortfin Mako shark circled a photographer's boat for two hours and only left after filling up on bait which was thrown into the water The Shortfin Mako shark - which have been known to attack humans eventually left after eating tuna baits thrown into the water.
