Mrs. J's Physical Science Page - Lecture Notes

Students of high school physical science and introductory chemistry and physics may find them useful as a supplement to their own class notes or as a review. Teachers, please feel free to use and modify them for your own classes. If you do so, I would appreciate hearing from you. Focus 5 is a set of exercises that provides students and teachers with skills to minimize distraction and develop a greater sense of focus and awareness.

Focus 5 Mindfulness Exercises

The exercises range in length from one to five minutes. We all experience the difference in how quickly we learn something new when we are fully focused, and how easily new information can pass us by when we are not paying attention. We all carry with us the set of things that interest, excite, puzzle, or worry us. Learning experiences will only be effective if we can pull the learner away from those things in the outside world and into the immediate lesson or activity. Every teacher knows this challenge only too well. Focus 5 was created through a SERP partnership with Baltimore City Schools. Take less than than 5 minutes a day. Please be in contact with us if you are a: Teacher using Focus 5, and you want to share your experience(s).

Every teacher's goal, right? But sometimes we get discouraged/frustrated/overwhelmed and we start counting down the days to summer vacation.. Not saying counting down the days is bad, but how can we learn to enjoy each day? I've tried several different things over the years and have finally found my favorite... But before we get to that, let me tell you what hasn't worked for me. Match Fishtank. Direct instruction for understanding by Rosenshine and Stevens. Conceptual Understanding in Mathematics. The Common Core Standards in Mathematics stress the importance of conceptual understanding as a key component of mathematical expertise.

Conceptual Understanding in Mathematics

Alas, in my experience, many math teachers do not understand conceptual understanding. Far too many think that if students know all the definitions and rules, then they possess such understanding. The Standards themselves arguably offer too little for confused educators. The document merely states that “understanding” means being able to justify procedures used or state why a process works: But what does mathematical understanding look like? A few of the “understanding” standards provide further insight: Students understand connections between counting and addition and subtraction (e.g., adding two is the same as counting on two). Note what I highlighted: understanding requires focused inferential work. A procedure is a sequence of steps by which a frequently encountered problem may be solved. 1.
