Meet The Airstream You Can Pull Behind A Subaru. The iconic Airstream silver bullet just got smaller, good news if you don’t drive a full-size pickup. Airstream today announced the launch of its newest travel trailer, the Airstream Basecamp. With a base weight of 2,585 pounds, you can (just barely) pull it behind a Subaru Outback. Loaded with gear, it has a trailer capacity of 3,500 pounds. You’ll need a slightly larger truck for that. But most small pickups and SUVs, and many crossovers, can also easily handle a pull-behind in the 2,500 – 3,500 pound range. Made in Jackson Center, Ohio, the Basecamp is also meant to handle rougher roads than previous models. The Camper You Can Pull With Your Subaru At just 1,100 pounds, the Happier Camper can be towed by many small cars, yet still packs a lot into the small trailer. It is the lightest trailer in the Airstream fleet, which, combined with an aggressive departure angle, large wheels and tires, and aggressive side flares, makes uneven terrain accessible and towing easier.

Airstream compacts its sleek aluminum construction into Basecamp trailer (again) When we first saw Airstream's announcement, we thought the Basecamp was the fruits of its recent acquisition of Nest Caravans, a notion that was supported by the launch timeframe and by the fact that former Nissan designer Bryan Thompson had a hand in creating both the Nest and the Basecamp. However, after digging deep into our annals, we realized that the Basecamp was actually created in collaboration with Nissan more than a decade ago. Airstream's PR team tells us that the first Basecamp was pulled after a few model years when Airstream decided that the market wasn't quite right.

After extensive research and some redesigning, Airstream now feels the market is ripe for the small, sleek Basecamp, a model that is completely independent of the upcoming Nest-based Airstream. Airstream's research undoubtedly ventured through the crossover utility vehicle market and took note of the small trailer/camper renaissance we've witnessed in the past few years. Propane tanks, LP appliances, generators, water holding tanks and batteries allow most recreational vehicles to boondock (dry-camping away from any hookups like power water or waste) for limited periods of time. But the majority of traditional RV systems have limitations with dependence on costly and non-renewable resources like propane or other petroleum products. With the Land Yacht we don’t want to be dependant on propane, fuel or the, “grid”. So we began looking at different sustainable and efficient off-grid solutions.
