Last Supernatural Con of 2013 – Going Out with a Bang at Burcon! Banner outside Burbank Con Hotel As the last stop in the 2013 convention tour, the Creation Supernatural convention in Burbank last weekend was invested with a lot of emotion, for both fans and cast.
It’s been a wild ride, and there’s something bittersweet about the year ending. That gave Burcon an extra emotional punch, and more than a few moments that had us tearing up a bit. Here are some of the highlights of the con for us, including some meet and greet tidbits and pre-con chats. We kicked off the weekend on Thursday night by meeting up with the Supernatural writers for drinks at a local restaurant. [Minor spoilers in this paragraph] We also talked about the return of Garth, speculated about what Charlie and Dorothy might be up to in Oz, conveyed fandom’s (and our) fervent wish for the Samulet to reappear in the present, and how much we all hope that Richard Speight Jr. ends up back on the Show.

Supernatural 9.08. Warner Bros/The CW Rock and A Hard Place was a great title for this week’s episode, full of double meanings and a dash of innuendo, in keeping with the theme of the stand-alone plot.
That is most certainly where Dean is right now, and it’s absolutely heartbreaking to see him there. Sam too is stuck between a rock and a hard place – he just doesn’t know it. Double heartbreak! Before I talk about Sam and Dean and where we are in the main story arc (which is invariably what captures most of my attention), a few tidbits about the standalone part of the episode.
Awkward Dean is one of my favorite flavors, so I liked that part of his interaction with Suzy, as he tries to read her signals and go along with what she actually wants. I admit to being a bit confused about Suzy’s motivations, especially when she switched on a dime from determined abstinence to seducing Dean.

Warner Bros/The CW Last night’s Supernatural episode, “Bad Boys”, felt like the Show in Season 1 and 2, when every episode left me literally vibrating with FEELS and bursting with this tremendous creative energy.
I wanted to know MORE about what had just happened outside those 42 minutes on my screen. I wanted to dissect every moment and peer into Sam and Dean’s heads and figure out why they did what they did and what they meant by every (nearly unspoken) word and every gesture and every long look. I wanted to read fanfiction and write meta and celebrate Show with everyone else who was blown away like I was. That’s how I felt after last night’s episode. This morning I woke up remembering a conversation we had with Eric Kripke back in Season 4 when we interviewed him for our books. We found ourselves smiling while we listened; Eric was smiling too. Since getting possessed by Ezekiel, Sam (Jared Padalecki) has repeatedly been pushed out of the action on Supernatural this season to allow the angel to save the day (with the delightful exception of Sam's scenes with Crowley last week). And though with each use of his powers, Zeke — and thus, Sam — weakens a little more, Padalecki says Sam will get back in the fray soon. That started the Season 8 finale episode off with ALL THE FEELS, and they just kept coming. I felt almost as exhausted as poor Sam looked by the time it was over. And then I had to sleep on it, and most likely process it even in my dreams, and then wake up the next morning and start pondering it all over again. Here’s what I came up with, after all that pondering. This episode was all about Being Human, which perhaps shouldn’t be a surprise considering it was written by Jeremy Carver.
Crowley tells Dean that it’s his humanity, his typically human prioritizing of emotion, that will keep Crowley winning. Castiel’s story is about humanity too. Season 8, Sam Winchester & Me.
