Every day, I see recurring patterns and themes around how women chronically undervalue or undermine themselves, leaving money on the table and sabotaging their own growth and success. While I’m not an academic social researcher, I have seen through my own research and training that men do not typically limit their professional growth in the same ways. I realize that I am generalizing here, but after nine years of consulting with over 10,000 women to help them “power up and speak up” for what they want, deserve and require, I’ve seen these assertions hold up. And I’ve faced and addressed each and every one of these limits myself.
What are the most common ways women limit or sabotage their success? The Top 10 Relationship Words That Aren't Translatable Into English. Here are my top ten words, compiled from online collections, to describe love, desire and relationships that have no real English translation, but that capture subtle realities that even we English speakers have felt once or twice.

An Australian study showed that strong social networks may lengthen survival in elderly men and women, with good friends being even more likely to increase longevity than close family members. As author Edna Buchanon put it, "Friends are the family we choose for ourselves. " A good friendship is something to savor and protect. Yet, like any human relationship, even our closest of friendships can unravel in moments of weakness. The closer we get to someone, the more invested we become in their emotions and behaviors. Lisa Firestone: Stop the Blame Game to Improve Your Relationship. When it comes to placing blame in a relationship, it's almost always easier to see the faults in our partner than in ourselves.
One of the problems with couples pointing fingers is that usually both parties are right, and both are wrong. Every person is full of flaws and certain ways that we attempt to defend ourselves that push us away from other people. These self-protective defenses come out even stronger when we get close to someone, and old feelings start to get triggered in us in ways we don't necessarily expect and aren't entirely conscious of. The many ways we get hurt throughout our lives help shape our defenses. Negative past experiences, particularly those from our childhood, leave us on guard as adults. In improving any relationship, the focus should always be on empowering yourself. Lisa Firestone: How to Be Your Own Couples Therapist. In my 25 years as a therapist, I've worked with countless couples facing a broad spectrum of challenges.
Yet, despite the diversity between them in age, occupation or origin, I'm amazed at the similarities in the patterns and pitfalls that couples fall into. When two people walk into my office and start discussing their relationship, the first thing I tell them is to focus on empowering yourself. The only person you can change is you. If both parties accept this, real change is possible in the relationship. With this theme of self-empowerment in mind, I offer you six suggestions on how you can be your own couple's therapist.
