Gay law repeal hypocritical: activists
Voters will view Liberal National Party (LNP) leader Campbell Newman as a hypocrite if he moves to repeal laws allowing same-sex civil unions, a gay rights campaigner says. Queensland's Deputy Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls says the LNP may repeal the laws, passed in parliament on Wednesday night, if it wins government next year. Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays spokeswoman Shelley Argent said the LNP leader had given his ostensible support to the gay community by saying he personally believed in same-sex unions. "If Campbell Newman becomes premier and is part of the repeal, you would wonder what kind of person would do that," Ms Argent told AAP on Friday.IRAN

Up to 50,000 people have fled violence in a remote border area of South Sudan, the United Nations said on Monday, after days of clashes between two tribes. New 'parallel revolution' against corruption - Opinion - Al Jazeera English
London, UK - As the year of revolution draws to a close, a new "parallel revolution" against corruption is emerging in Yemen. Over the past two weeks strikes have spread across the country and are proving effective, leading to the hope that this Yemeni uprising of 2011 can truly bring change to the Arab world’s poorest country. The chant of "Irhal, Irhal" - "Leave, Leave" - is now being directed at corrupt figures of authority throughout the country. Unlike some of the other Arab revolutions, especially the Libyan and Syrian ones, the Yemeni revolution was mainly not one of the politically oppressed, but the economically oppressed. The extent of the atmospheric levels of corruption can be seen in the places where protests and strikes have been called. One of the first strikes was by Yemenia Airways workers; the airline, practically bankrupt, has been destroyed by corruption.Chile rising - Fault Lines - Al Jazeera English

Some villages have been entirely washed away by the flash flooding Visiting the area, Mr Aquino reassured survivors the government would be there to help but reportedly acknowledged mistakes might have been made. Some authorities have begun mass burials, but they are opposed by some relatives of the dead. Disaster agencies are attempting to provide food, water, medicine and body bags, but damaged roads are hampering efforts to reach survivors in remote villages.

Although the water in the ditch was not deep, it still claimed 15 young lives Only on Sunday, the government issued draft measures to guarantee children's safety, including compulsory checks on buses and their drivers. "The water was not very deep, probably more than a metre (yard) or so - up to an adult's waist - but it was deep enough to drown some of the children," Zhang, the wife of the factory owner, told the Associated Press. They have been keen to draw a distinction between a crash in Gansu province last month in which 19 kindergarten children died, the BBC's Michael Bristow in Beijing reports. Monday also saw another crash involving a school bus, this time in southern Guangdong province. Some 37 pupils were injured after the bus carrying 59 children was hit by a heavy-duty truck, Xinhua news agency reports.

Joseph Kabila gained most of his support in eastern areas The Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila has rejected claims that he won elections through widespread rigging. The Carter Center observer group said the results "lack credibility", while the Catholic archbishop of Kinshasa said they did not reflect "the truth". He pointed to his own disappointing scores in the eastern provinces as proof that the election process had been transparent and said these elections were "far better" than those in 2006, when he was first elected. Mr Kabila said he was not surprised by Mr Tshisekedi's declaration of himself as president, but he would press ahead with the task of governing DR Congo and was confident that the economy would achieve double-digit growth in the next two or three years.

In the past weeks, Iranian lawmakers said that they were discussing the issue of oil export cuts to EU with officials from the Oil Ministry. EU leaders endorsed last week the latest restrictive sanction measures on Iran's oil exports adopted by the bloc's foreign ministers on Jan 23. On Saturday, Iran's Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi said that Tehran will definitely stop its oil exports to certain European countries. Qasemi called on the EU states to review their decision on the oil embargo on Iran, saying that EU states' oil imports from the Islamic republic "just" comprises 18 percent of its total oil exports. Late in January, Qasemi said that "less than 20 percent of Iran 's oil exports are destined for Europe" and the EU sanctions will take a heavy toll on the European people.
