Fans lift J-culture over language barrier | The Japan Times Online

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/fa20060907a1.html "They do that so the glue melts, which allows them to take apart the volume page by page so they can be scanned easily," explains Jonathan, 21, a journalism student at West Virginia University who did not want his last name published. Why would folks do that to their precious and costly imported comic books? Because they are "scanlators," a growing community of fans whose love of Japanese manga drives them to take each page, scan it into their computer, then translate the material from Japanese into English and upload it to the Internet for a wider audience to enjoy for free. But it is not just Japanese comics that have proven ripe for amateur translations.

Web gives niche interests a chance in the free market | The Japan Times Online

Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006 Economists right back to Adam Smith in the 18th century have exalted the concept of the free market, where all commodities can be bought and sold without tariffs or subsidies. In Western neoliberal political thought, market freedom had become viewed by the 1980s as an extension of personal autonomy.
An international coalition of Japanese and American-based manga publishers have joined together to combat what they call the “rampant and growing problem” of scanlations, the practice of posting scanned and translated editions of Japanese comics online without permission of the copyright holders. The group is threatening legal action against 30 scanlation sites.

Manga Publishers Face Uphill Battle Against Scanlations

The announcement of a joint coalition between American and Japanese publishers targeting illegal online manga “scanlations” has spurred a flurry of activity on two major aggregator sites. Since the announcement three weeks ago, MangaFox, one of the primary aggregators of illegal manga scans, has pulled over 330 titles—a large number of them Viz Media properties—from their home page. http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/book-news/comics/article/43672-manga-publishers-face-uphill-battle-against-scanlations.html
