For nearly a decade the surest sign of trouble for a consumer-based Internet startup was simple: lousy web traffic numbers. Eyeballs, of course, never insure profits. If page views and unique visitors aren’t moving up, however, trouble is coming. That’s bad news for Twitter, a company with a billion-dollar valuation to live up to. The number of unique visitors to Twitter’s Web site from the U.S. fell to 19.2 million in October from 20.9 million in September, according to comScore.
