Steve Yarbrough (R). Another Arizona state Senator has taken to CNN to try to justify the state’s “license to discriminate” bill (SB 1062), which would allow business owners to use their religious beliefs as an excuse to refuse service to LGBT people. Just like his colleague Sen. Al Melvin (R), Sen. Steve Yarbrough (R), who helped write the bill, could not provide an example of what problem the legislation was trying to fix. YARBROUGH: The hypothetical that I think is the most useful is: let’s assume that we have three gentlemen who are devout Jewish fellows who form a corporation and go in the catering business. Watch the full interview, in which Yarbrough explains to Randi Kaye his understanding of how the bill works: Yarbrough’s hypothetical is not only unrealistic, but entirely irrelevant. Client Fires Lobbyist Over Push To Ban Gays From NFL. By Josh Israel "Client Fires Lobbyist Over Push To Ban Gays From NFL" Jack Burkman A day after Washington, DC, lobbyist Jack Burkman announced that he would push for legislation to prohibit the National Football League from employing gay players, one of his clients has severed all ties with him.

DC Solar Solutions, Inc., a California-based green energy company, told ThinkProgress on Tuesday that it would no longer allow Burkman to represent the company because of his comments. The company’s CEO Jeffrey Carpoff and COO Paulette Carpoff released a joint statement saying that the company has “severed ties” with Burkman “effective immediately”: DC Solar does not condone or support Mr. Burkman’s homophobic views, and since learning about his misguided efforts to write legislation banning gay athletes from the NFL, we have ended our relationship with him. CREDIT: Turn Arizona Blue (@UniteBlueAZ) The national spotlight is now shining on Arizona as Gov. Jan Brewer (R) weighs whether to sign the controversial “license to discriminate” bill (SB 1062) passed by the legislature last week. State Sen. Several mayors from across the state have also urged Brewer to veto, many of whom serve cities with LGBT non-discrimination protections. On ABC’s This Week on Sunday, former Bush adviser Matthew Dowd said that it should be “an easy veto” for Brewer, citing the impact SB 1062 could have on the economy. Business groups have indicated that these economic concerns are valid. After analyzing the bill, we are very concerned about the effect it could have on Arizona’s economy. On Friday, hundreds protested in cities across the states, making their opposition to the bill known.

By Zack Ford "Conservatives Fail In Bid To Overturn California Law Protecting Transgender Students" The final results are in, and opponents of California’s new law protecting transgender students have failed to collect enough signatures to challenge the law with a ballot referendum.

County election officers determined that just 487,484 of the signatures they submitted were valid, short of the 504,760 that were necessary. The coalition fighting the law, Privacy for All Students (PFAS), submitted 619,387 signatures. The law, AB 1266, guarantees that transgender students can use the school facilities and play on the athletic teams they identify with. This is surely not the end, however, of PFAS’ effort to fight the law. The groups that are part of the coalition, like the Pacific Justice Institute (PJI) and National Organization for Marriage, have promised that they will continue to fight trans students’ equality.

Apple Warns Arizona Governor Anti-Gay Bill Will Hurt Highly Anticipated Sapphire Glass Factory. By Lauren C. Williams "Apple Warns Arizona Governor Anti-Gay Bill Will Hurt Highly Anticipated Sapphire Glass Factory" CREDIT: Shutterstock Apple called up Arizona’s governor, Jan Brewer (R) Tuesday to urge her to veto the state’s anti-gay bill. The state’s controversial SB 1062 bill allows individuals to discriminate against LGBT people and potentially other groups based on a religious objection. Brewer has only a few days to decide whether to veto the bill. Apple has a vested interest in stopping the bill: it’s on the verge of opening a new manufacturing plant in the state. Apple joins other major companies, including Marriott and American Airlines, in warning Brewer about the bill’s potential damage to the economy. Anti-gay bills have been introduced in several states but are very bad for businesses, studies have shown.

Twenty-one states have bills in place that protect against sexual discrimination. Arizona Super Bowl Committee Urges Veto Of State's 'License To Discriminate' Law. By Travis Waldron "Arizona Super Bowl Committee Urges Veto Of State’s ‘License To Discriminate’ Law" New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (right) passes official Super Bowl hosting duties to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer after this year’s game. As Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) considers whether to sign a law that would give businesses a “license to discriminate” against LGBT people, the state’s Super Bowl host committee is urging her to stamp a veto on the bill.

University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona is scheduled to host Super Bowl XLIX next February. “We share the NFL’s core values which embrace tolerance, diversity, inclusiveness and prohibit discrimination,” the host committee said in statement released Monday. The NFL’s Arizona Cardinals also expressed opposition to the bill. “What so many love about football is its ability to bring people together,” the team said in a statement. Update. Challenged By Anderson Cooper To Provide One Example To Justify Anti-Gay Bill, Arizona Senator Comes Up Empty. By Zack Ford "Challenged By Anderson Cooper To Provide One Example To Justify Anti-Gay Bill, Arizona Senator Comes Up Empty" Anderson Cooper challenges Arizona State Sen. Al Melvin (R) about SB 1062. Proponents of Arizona’s SB 1062 argue that it “protects religious freedom,” but the national backlash against its passage has emphasized that it will be used to justify discrimination against LGBT people and possibly any other group that an individual might have a religious objection to.

State Sen. Al Melvin (R), who is also running for governor, supported the bill and joined Anderson Cooper on CNN Monday to defend its passage and urge Gov. During the extended interview, not all of which aired, Cooper pressed Melvin about whether the bill could actually be used to justify discrimination, suggesting an example of a loan officer refusing to provide a loan to a divorced woman because of his religious belief against divorce. COOPER: You say it’s all about protecting people of faith in Arizona.
