All Things Thrifty. Finding custom decor items can get VERY pricey, and since most of us don’t have a lot of extra cash these days, DIY decorating is getting more and more popular. Making custom decor pieces yourself can save you hundreds of dollars in the long run, and the great thing about All Things Thrifty, is that I TEACH YOU how to do it! I was lucky to recruit the Hubsters to help me again on this project. He. is. the. best. Items you need for this project: 1 piece of 3/4″ MDF (comes in approx. 4 feet X 8 feet sheets) I got mine at Lowes. Here is your pattern. Step 1: Trace your pattern onto the sheet of MDF. Elsie wanted to try a mirror DIY for her new office that involved these small wooden matchsticks, and it only took a few seconds of trying different arrangements around the edge before I got excited about the end result. Supplies:-spray paint-mirror (we bought this 24" x 24" safety mirror)-small match craft sticks that are thinner at one end (check your local craft store)-popsicle sticks-super glue-painter's tape The first thing I did was make an "X" over the mirror with tape so I could divide the mirror into four equal areas.

Once I would get 10-15 sticks lined up, I would place a thin piece of painter's tape over the top of them to keep them together. A Blissful Nest. After our move we had some casualties. It’s bound to happen. We haven’t had a move yet where we didn’t loose numerous items that were broken beyond repair during the move. This last move was no exception. We had several things arrive broken or completely mutilated. I tell ya….this moving every few years is NOT for the faint at heart! Here’s my Full Length Mirror Makeover….. One of the items that arrived broken this move was a cheap full length mirror that we had hanging behind my daughter’s door.

I happened to have some 1×6 boards in the garage. I grabbed some wood stain that I had on hand and stained the boards a dark ebony. I bought some decorative wood trim and a pretty wood applique to use on the mirror. The mirror was glued straight onto the three boards with some Gorilla Epoxy and clamps. Pretty awesome transformation right? I absolutely love the distressed white wood next to the dark wood. It’s amazing that this started out as a cheap mirror and now it looks so rich and expensive.

I started this thing last weekend determined to finish it. It didn't happen. Shocking isn't it. I have been wanting to make a "frame" for my mirror for a while. You know how it goes you think about it, add it to the to do list and one day you see a fabulous mirror somewhere and it moves up the list. You kind of think about it some more. I couldn't finish it last weekend because the plywood refused to take the paint and I ran out.

To make the "frame" I cut a piece of plywood to the size I wanted. I laid the mirror on the plywood and started playing around with different trim. The carved piece along the top is something I got a million years ago but never quite figured out what to do with. I spray painted, dry brushed with off white paint and used dark brown glaze to finish. I love the color against the dark wall. This is the view when you walk into the room. Bob Vila. Photo: fotosearch.com Done any shopping for your home recently? In perusing the aisles, you may have noticed that even a very simple mirror can be surprisingly expensive, considering it’s just a piece of glass flanked by wood on four sides. If you have intermediate woodworking skills—or the willingness to persist through a bit of trial and error—you’ll get a better deal on one by buying the materials separately and frame the mirror yourself.

Apart from saving money, taking the DIY route also means you can customize the dimensions, ensuring that the framed mirror will fit precisely in the spot where you’re planning to hang it. Read on to learn how to frame a mirror. It’s easier than you think! Note: This step-by-step tutorial describes how to use a pair of 1″ x 3″ boards (each 7 feet in length) to frame a 30″ x 22″ mirror. STEP 1 Measure the length and width of your unframed mirror. STEP 2 Cut a dado into each of your four wood pieces. Casa Haus. I didn't use to like yellow - not for my home, my clothes or even my paintings. I tend to like cooler colors. And yet, I've seen the gray-yellow trend lately and I've got to confess, I love it. I find it quite pleasing, refreshing and balanced. Ranging from dark gray to the lightest one, yellow sparks here and there are the perfect mix to generate gorgeous rooms.

How do you like it? Centsational Girl. My friends, if there ever was a bandwagon, this carefree DIYer is jumping right on it. For months, I’ve seen fabulous versions of the sunburst mirror pop up all over the blogosphere. And for weeks now, with every stop in the paint department, I couldn’t help but notice how those paint stir sticks might just make a very cool version of this decorative favorite. I couldn’t figure out how to stack them nicely enough around the center to make it worth my effort, but that little road bump didn’t stop me from snagging more than my fair share of free stir sticks at a time, like 8 or 10, over the course of a month. When I read how Danielle used an embroidery hoop, that convinced me to make my own version too! Those free stir sticks led to this latest creation: How to Make a (Paint Stir Stick) Sunburst Mirror Paint your embroidery hoop.

Some paint stir sticks have a small curve in them, so I simply trimmed mine with my compound miter saw. (quick Photoshop examples) Chapman Place. Chapman Place. Cheap Chic Home. I really started noticing Trumeau mirrors a few years ago. After I’d seen a few DIYs on blogs, I had the notion of making my own buzzing around in my brain. One of the thrift stores nearby, Lighthouse Ministries, seems to have an abundance of discarded dresser mirrors ripe for the picking. The day I went, there were two that would have worked for this project. In my true “think-about-it” fashion, I did not buy this mirror the first time I saw it. The mirror had a rustic-vibe going on, but the bones were perfect. The how-tos start with (1) finding a mirror that will work, this one was $15. (Sorry, I could only find a cell phone photo, but you can definitely see what I started with.) (2) Decide on what type of trim you want to use.

. (3) Decide on your placement, measure, and cut your trim using a miter box. . (4) Paint your trim and base mirror. Oops, I guess I didn’t get any photos of the base being painted or before-wax for that matter. I tried sanding, but it freaked me out. Cheap Chic Home. I’ve seen a few bloggers repurpose their old vanity mirrors and make overscale floor mirrors. My inspiration bloggers are my friend, Jan, at Bobbypins Boardwalk and, Rayan, at Design Confidential. (Yipes! Disregard junk on chest.) When we remodeled our home a few years ago, one of these mirrors survived. It’s been in my closet ever since, where I can peer through all of the dust to take a look at myself. In the back of my mind, I’ve wanted to redo it. I followed Rayan’s instructions, because I figured I would have to purchase fewer supplies. I purchased 3-8 ft. lengths of baseboard. Putting it together: My baseboard really wasn’t thick enough that I felt like I could put any nails or sink screws into it, so I purchased corner braces at Walmart and screwed them in.

Then, I took that puppy out into the garage. Next, I put duct tape along the back, that seemed like the safest option to me. Here it is with just a bit of staging.
