Genius Hour Trailers. At ISTE last week, Jane McGonigal showed a fascinating trailer that had been designed for a project she was doing with the New York Public Library.
You can see it here. I was intrigued by the concept, and thought it would be a great way to introduce Genius Hour to my students this coming school year. I found an excellent Genius Hour trailer online that had been created by Ryan O’Shea, but I wanted to make one that was a bit more generic so anyone could use it. 20 Time Year in Review. This was the second year implementing 20 Time Projects here at PHS, and based upon some of the challenges we faced the first time around, many changes were made to this year's journey.
I credit incredible educators such as Karl Lindgren-Streicher, Kevin Brookhouser and Kate Petty for sharing great ideas and providing inspiration to keep pushing forward with this concept. Here's a rundown of this year's 20 Time Project at PHS: Introducing 20 Time (September) I introduced the project with this 20 Time Presentation that provides some background regarding creativity, motivation, and concept of "20 Time. " This year I also provided students with 20 Time Guidelines to give them a better sense of the expectations and timeline for the project. This year's project also had two basic requirements: 1. 2. Brainstorming Sessions (September - October) Last year, students had a particularly difficult time getting started. Maintaining Focus (October - November) Project Proposals (December) OpenTED. OpenTED is an experimental initiative that invites anyone to submit a video and share an idea.
The best submissions will be considered for inclusion as an official TED talk of the day. For this experiment, there are no hard lines around what is and isn’t a “TED Talk.” You can stick to the standard format – delivering a talk from the stage – or you can explore the infinite ways to share an idea on video. But one point is important: Your OpenTED submission must be in video format, and must center on an idea.
Ideas can be grand and global (let’s solve climate change!) An idea might offer a new, bold, big-picture way of looking at the world: a broad call for tolerance, a flipped view of human behavior, a breakthrough in the lab that will change our lives. But most important: A great idea doesn’t just entertain you and disappear. That's a test: Will what you are about to say light up another person?
