Australia's banks face the prospect of a Senate inquiry into their behaviour unless the Federal Government agrees to set up an independent inquiry into the financial system along the lines proposed by six public policy economists.

The last such inquiry, chaired by business figure Stan Wallis, reported in 1997. Greens leader Bob Brown said the financial system had changed since then with the banks lifting their share of new loans to 89.4 per cent from 85 per cent in the past year. "If the Government fails to act (the Greens) will move to establish a Senate inquiry into Australia's banking system when the Senate resumes in August," he said.

" "It would need good terms of reference and a representative panel," he said. Senate Bk acountable 2009. Senate Bk Guarantees 2009. Välkommen till ICA Banken - ICA Banken. Accessibility of banking. Sydney, 18 February, 2009: The Australian Bankers' Association (ABA) has today expressed surprise at the Finance Sector Union (FSU) statement which criticised bank charges, including ATM fees.

This is surprising because, as the FSU members know more than anyone, it is the sound performance of banks, like any other business, that is the best safeguard of long-term employment. Since the global financial crisis, funding costs have increased and revenue is under pressure. ATM reform will potentially reduce bank revenue in this business category. The ABA fails to see how the FSU would oppose the banks acting commercially to minimise the impact of these reforms on revenue and cost recovery.

Having strong, profitable banks is one factor that is differentiating Australia's economic outlook from many comparable countries, and it is widely seen as the reason Australia will not face the same unemployment rates of other countries. Sydney, 15 December, 2011: The Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA) was pleased to see that cheque and debit card fraud rates fell in the latest payment fraud statistics released today by the Australian Payments Clearing Association (APCA).

Total fraud rates, however, saw a small increase due to a rise in credit card fraud, but compared to the millions of transactions that flow through the payments system, fraud is still at low levels. Steven Münchenberg, Chief Executive of the ABA, said: “Banks take fraud prevention very seriously. Banks have in place computer systems for comprehensive monitoring of transactions and staff expert in fraud identification. This protects customers and detects fraud. For example, the banks’ systems can detect suspicious activity and immediately take action to protect your account.” The ABA was pleased to see that debit card fraud rates have dropped to record lows.
