The 291 Gallery. MoMA PS1: Profile. Profile MoMA PS1 is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit contemporary art institutions in the United States. An exhibition space rather than a collecting institution, MoMA PS1 devotes its energy and resources to displaying the most experimental art in the world. A catalyst and an advocate for new ideas, discourses, and trends in contemporary art, MoMA PS1 actively pursues emerging artists, new genres, and adventurous new work by recognized artists in an effort to support innovation in contemporary art. MoMA PS1 achieves this mission by presenting its diverse program to a broad audience in a unique and welcoming environment in which visitors can discover and explore the work of contemporary artists. MoMA PS1 was founded in 1971 by Alanna Heiss as the Institute for Art and Urban Resources Inc., an organization devoted to organizing exhibitions in underutilized and abandoned spaces across New York City.

Art in General. Art in General is a nonprofit organization that assists artists with the production and presentation of new work. It changes in response to the needs of artists and informs and engages the public about their work. Publicly launched in 2005, Art in General’s New Commissions Program centers on developing and exhibiting new and challenging work by artists at a pivotal point in their practice. We commission new projects in any medium or form—from painting to sculpture to performance to video to other, perhaps undefined, types of art or interdisciplinary work. Art in General was founded in 1981 by artists Martin Weinstein and Teresa Liszka in the General Hardware building—hence the name “Art in General”.

Weinstein and Liszka aimed to create a space where artists could exhibit unconventional work and exchange ideas with their peers. The first exhibition took place in 1982. Art in General’s second gallery is a storefront space located at street-level. Small space big ideas. Mission and History: apexart is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit contemporary visual arts organization located in Lower Manhattan. Through our exhibitions, international residency programs, publications, and events, we are committed to cultural and intellectual diversity and aim to stimulate public dialogue about contemporary art. We are interested in employing democratic processes within the art world and involving our audience in the decision-making process to ensure that our activities reflect the interests of our viewers. Over the years we have worked with more than 1,500 artists, from emerging to established and from all over the globe, have organized over 170 exhibitions, and hosted more than 110 residents from diverse fields.

Founded in 1994, apexart's original mission was to facilitate independent curators – a new employment at that time – by giving them a space in which to experiment. Apexart is also committed to developing public programs that are free and open to our community. Camel Art Space. APARTMENT SHOW. Artists Space. Local Project – Art Space New York. CAVE.
