Unclutterer: Daily tips on how to organize your home and office. Extreme Minimalism. I’ve drawn an unusual amount of attention to my minimalism project this week. First, Dan Patterson of ABC Radio News interviewed me about my 15 things. Dan is one of those amazing interviewers that you wish you were just watching instead of getting interviewed by. Each question was eloquent and succinct.

Then came my answers. I think I did a pretty good job; it was fun to do. Then came a post by Scott at LaughingSquid, which really showed me the power of Tumblr. That night I had drinks with someone who had seen the story (on Reddit, which I can’t find), and I realized the story had spread. Alex Hillman let me crash on his couch after a panel last week on Rethinking Shelter at P’unk Avenue. The winning caption in a contest is “floordrobe.” The first question someone asks me when I tell them about the project is “How do you define something you own?” I don’t have a permanent address or a second pair of jeans. Debt’s founder. Nearly three years ago, Courtney and I posted our first “list of everything we own” as we were downsizing and preparing to travel with our backpacks through Australia. Since then we’ve gone through a lot of change. Down to almost nothing for a while, back to a rented house full of crap in Indiana, on the road in our RV and stopping for about a year in Asheville, N.C., before moving to our current home of Portland, Oregon, where I work for filmmaking and storytelling company Stillmotion since retiring from Man Vs.

Created by “a guy named Dave” a few years ago the 100 Thing Challenge is exactly what it sounds like. Reducing your personal possessions, the stuff you need to get through life, to a total of 100 items. Actually the number is arbitrary. It can be 200, 500, or 50. It is what ever you are comfortable with. The less stuff you have, the less you have to worry about. Again the number can be whatever you want, but it does set a limit on what you have and forces you to make some choices on what to keep and what to get rid of. » Minimalist Fun: The 100 Things Challenge. Could you cut your personal possessions down to 100 things? Last week, in my Haiku Productivity post, I mentioned blogger Dave Bruno’s 100 thing challenge. It’s actually a challenge that I’ve seen in years past on other forums, but Dave’s version is that he’s trying to cut his personal possessions down to 100 items. Things not included: Stuff that’s shared between him and other family members.Non-personal stuff, like dishes, cleaning supplies, etc.Books.Tools.Collections count as one item. I thought I’d give the challenge a try, as it’s an extension of Haiku Productivity — which has one rule: limit everything you do.

Thanks for visiting! The list below contains the items of my personal possession. I will be reducing many of them within the last month while trading in a few old items for new. I strongly suggest any and everyone try this out. The worst thing that happens is you become a bit more organized with a lot less unnecessary stuff. This is my personal 50 Things Challenge … I’m listing all my personal possessions and trying to keep them to 50 things.

I challenge you to join me! Note: This used to be the 100 Things Challenge, but as of 02.13.2010, I’ve cut my challenge in half and got rid of half my possessions over the last week. The rules I’m following: Only personal things, that belong only to me. Doesn’t include household furniture, dishes, cleaning supplies, or other shared items such as our family digital camera and the TV. Books aren’t counted. Got rid of recently (things that were on the list): Muji tank top, light grey.
