900 fill down? I've ordered down through Ayce,(thru-kiker) several times.Give him a call and ask what the last batch of down fill is.Ayce puts 800 fill, because you will get at least that. Most of the time his fill order is around 830 but when he gets the 860 fill he orders more, so it will be available about 1/2 the time. You can call 900 what-ever you want, but 100% of it will be 860.I don't think they have there staff picking out the few feathers that come in it to make it 900.In fact the down pretty much is 900 fill that you get.

The few feathers you get with it are what bring it down to the 830-860 range. Maybe that's why company's call it 900 fill. They just count the good stuff as the number and don't take anything off for the few feathers that come in it. Ask Ayce, he'll tell you straight. If you want to spend more for the 900, try also ordering 3 ounces from thru-hiker to see for your self, (it's all comes from the same batch). Thru-Hiker down. How much down do I need? I just recently finished making my own sleeping bag. So, let’s say you are like me and you want one as well. One of the initial things that you will want to do is gather your materials. Although it’s a lot more interesting picking out the fabric to use for the shell, the major material in terms of amount and cost is the insulation.

Since you are building your own sleeping bag I am just going to assume that you will be using down feathers as your choice of insulation. I can not actually imagine why anyone would go through the trouble of making their own sleeping bag if they plan on using polyester filling as insulation. If you are that type of person, I suggest you just go purchase one of the ubiquitous synthetic material bags on the market. If you still want to do this, you might as well read this post as well, since it will at least give you some idea of what you need to think about for how much insulation. It turns out not all down is equal. Speer sales. Speer TopBlanket. Speer 252 index. Thru-Hiker raw materials. Sleeping Bag. Please note: this page is a work-in-progress! Send any questions or comments to the designer Roger Caffin Sleeping Bags: warmth Remember the key point about being warm at night: the warmth comes from you, not the bag.

All the bag does is slow down your heat loss. This heat loss will depend on two major factors: how good is your metabolic rate tonight, and how cold is the surrounding air relative to your skin. Quilts and Bags Two things do fascinate me about sleeping bags and typical use. The other thing which fascinates me is how everyone buys a heavy 4-season winter bag with 800+ grams of down in it when they usually only go walking in the warmer months of the year.

Designs and materials There are several sleeping bag designs to choose from, some of which are illustrated to the right: Mummy Traditionally great for snow use, but so very cramped. Marketing Myths Along with these traditional classifications there are several myths about sleeping bags. Requirements for Design. Two Person Down Quilt. For the last two years Sherpa and I have been using a winter weight down sleeping bag opened in a quilt fashion as our nightly backpacking insulation. This allowed us to cut the weight of our kit as we were only carrying one sleeping bag for the two of us. It works reasonably well for three seasons and allowed us to “try” using a quilt to see if it worked for us. You might ask, well then why did you continue using it for 2 whole years? The simple answer; no one makes 2 person quilts rated to 30 degrees, weighing around 2lbs ( 907grams) for a price that we felt was worth upgrading.

We already owned the sleeping bag & it worked so why bother to part with a large chunk of cash (upwards of $700 US). Going in to our third year we were on the quest to drop a few more pounds from our packs, and we always hike together. This put me in to research over-drive!
