The Walking Dead. Walking Dead: Season One. Walking Dead: Season Two. The Walking Dead. Taking a well-worn genre-flesh-eating zombies overrun the world and the unlucky surviving humans must deal with the gruesome aftermath-and approaching it from a purely character-driven point of view propels this series into the spotlight from out of nowhere. This collection of the first six issues of the ongoing series opens with police officer Rick Grimes awakening from a gunshot-induced coma. From here, he's immediately dragged into a world where dangerous revenants are shambling amok without any sort of an explanation. From the moment Grimes comes to, it's a harrowing battle to avoid hordes of decomposing zombies and a hope-against-all-odds search for his missing family. Grimes makes his way to Atlanta, the nearest large city where there may be other living people, and events take several unexpected turns upon his arrival, as he meets up with a rural encampment of survivors.

Urban fantasist Seanan McGuire (Rosemary and Rue) picks up a new pen name for this gripping, thrilling, and brutal depiction of a postapocalyptic 2039. Twin bloggers Georgia and Shaun Mason and their colleague Buffy are thrilled when Sen. Peter Ryman, the first presidential candidate to come of age since social media saved the world from a virus that reanimates the dead, invites them to cover his campaign. Then an event is attacked by zombies, and Ryman's daughter is killed.

As the bloggers wield the newfound power of new media, they tangle with the CDC, a scheming vice presidential candidate, and mysterious conspirators who want more than the Oval Office. Shunning misogynistic horror tropes in favor of genuine drama and pure creepiness, McGuire has crafted a masterpiece of suspense with engaging, appealing characters who conduct a soul-shredding examination of what's true and what's reported.

There is no central power grid, no running water besides the Yangtze River. But the streets are clear of rubble and the local "security council" has prevented any postwar outbreaks. The first outbreak I saw was in a remote village that officially had no name.

The hospital was quiet; it had been a slow night, even for the increasing number of drunk-driving accidents. What could I say? I had a devil of a time finding the place. There were seven of them, all on cots, all barely conscious. I was still lost in my grand, cultural criticism when I knelt to examine the first patient. I examined the six other patients. "Who?

" I found "Patient Zero" behind the locked door of an abandoned house across town. (less) The Silent Land. One It was snowing again. Gentle six-pointed flakes from a picture book, settling on her jacket sleeve. The mountain air prickled with ice and the savor of pine resin. Zoe pulled the air into her lungs, feeling the cracking cold of it before letting go. If there are few moments in life that come as clear and as pure as ice, when the mountain breathed back at her, Zoe knew she had trapped one such moment and it could never be taken away. But her breath was warm and it said no to any premature thought of death. There was a whisper behind her. He cruised to an elegant stop beside her. Jake fractured the silence with a whoop of pure pleasure. “You shouldn’t do that. “And why not? “I don’t know why,” she said playfully. “Couldn’t help myself. It was. “You ready to go?” “Yep. Zoe was the more accomplished skier of the two.

Jake hit the west side of the steep but broad slope and she took the east, carving matching parallel tracks through the fresh snow. Then her smile iced over. A snow tomb? The Strain. PART ONE: January 1976 On those cloudy days, Robert Neville was never sure when sunset came, and sometimes they were in the streets before he could get back. If he had been more analytical, he might have calculated the approximate time of their arrival; but he still used the lifetime habit of judging nightfall by the sky, and on cloudy days that method didn’t work.

That was why he chose to stay near the house on those days. He walked around the house in the dull gray of afternoon, a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth, trailing threadlike smoke over his shoulder. He checked each window to see if any of the boards had been loosened. In the back yard he checked the hothouse and the water tank. Both the tank and the hothouse were undamaged today. He went to the house for a hammer and nails. He passed slowly through the dim silence of the living room, turned left into the small hallway, and left again into his bedroom. It was almost noon.
