In April 2012, following a period of research, we began a 2 year programme supporting practical science in schools and colleges, focused on better assessment, improved access to teaching resources, and strengthened roles for technicians and senior leaders. We believe that school and college students in the UK deserve a rich and varied programme of practical activities as part of their science education in order to provide them with the motivation and skills needed to progress to higher education, STEM employment and to become scientifically engaged citizens. In Spring 2011 Gatsby began work to build an accurate picture of the health of practical work in secondary school science in order to understand how best to support it in the future.
