Interview with Matana Roberts | Roulette NYC. Listen: Matana Roberts' Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile album - The Wire. Listen to an exclusive stream of Matana Roberts's new album Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile. Roberts is on the cover of The Wire 356, interviewed by Daniel Spicer. Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile is the second instalment in Roberts's projected 12 part Coin Coin series of albums, using the language of acoustic jazz to look at ideas of race, class and gender politics in American society. Daniel Spicer writes: "Coin Coin was the nickname of a totemic figure from African-American history, Marie Thérèse Metoyer – a freed slave who founded a community along the Cane River in Louisiana in the late 18th century where people of colour enjoyed greater freedoms and opportunities than they could in most other places in the South.

“She was a big part of my family lore,” says Matana Roberts. “My grandfather and his brother were orphans, and they were raised by a collective of different families who lived in that area that were actually blood-related to her.

Matana Roberts - Live in London (2011) Matana Roberts / Avant Negress. Well, I stay out of the jazz center because I just find the gender thing strange there, but it also has helped me. I have been brothered, fathered, uncled, through music and have met some amazing men that have made the questionable experiences softer. Also being a woman helps me to stand out sometimes in good ways. Music needs the feminine and masculine to really thrive and no matter your gender, we all have both sides. Does the word Tomboy mean anything to you?

Absolutely. Do you describe yourself as a feminist? Yes and no. How would you describe your style? I like to call it “ hobo chic.” Matana Roberts. Matana Roberts Matana Roberts is a dynamic saxophonist, composer and improviser, who tries to expose in her music the mystical roots and spiritual traditions of African American creative expression. A Chicago native, she was fortunate enough to be surrounded by elder musicians who showed her by distinct example the importance of listening to one’s personal creative voice while at the same time using the profound and many layered traditions of jazz and improvised musics to act only as her creative guide, not as her creative definer.

By using their mentorship, she has been able to craft a voice and creative focus that truly speaks to her own true artistic individuality. Her second recording collaboration with bassist Joshua Abrams and drummer/percussionist Chad Taylor — known as sticks&stones was released to critical acclaim on Thrill Jockey records in June of 2004.( www.thrilljockey.com) SHAE Meets Matana Roberts 'Live In London' - SOCIETY HAE. Listen: Matana Roberts' Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile album - The Wire. Musician of the year 2013. By Stef Next to the great "Best Albums Of The Year" lists and the "Happy New Ears Award", it makes sense, as we do every year, to highlight the work done by a number of musicians. Typically, you can only be named "Musician Of The Year" once, so Wadada Leo Smith, Satoko Fujii, Joëlle Léandre, Barry Guy, Martin Küchen, Alexandra Grimal, Ingrid Laubrock, Waclaw Zimpel, Evan Parker, Nate Wooley, Alexey Lapin, Lotte Anker, Mats Gustafsson, Trio X, and others are no longer eligible. (See tag "Musician Of The Year 20XX" on the right to get the full overview). So who was strong this year? I have to be a bit broader than the previous years, maybe out of necessity, because the choice is really tough. Matana Roberts Matana Roberts' Mississippi Moonchile, the second part of her epic Coin Coin figures on many "best of year" lists, figures in our own "Happy New Ears Award" list, and rightly so.

Okkyung Lee Guitarist Mary Halvorson appears to have been omnipresent this year. Ken Vandermark John Tchicai. Agenda Radio (version du 18 mars 12) - Jazz à Paris.
