November Spawned: a Novel Writing Handout

This was part planning tool, part keepsake, and part something to let the MLs relax at the meet-ups, so we didn't have to worry if we don't get through everything we wanted to say! Each year we make a few small changes here and there, updating the list of useful websites a bit, for example. Anyone's free to download a copy, whether that's for NaNoWriMo or just for writing a novel at any time of the year, and even if they aren't from Birmingham. There are three versions. One is A4-sized, for printing out to make a magazine-sized thing. In each case, print the odd pages first, then feed the paper back in and print the even ones in the appropriate order.

These are all pdfs. A4 version, for printing to A4 paper and then stapling at the left hand side. A5 booklet, for printing to A4 paper and then stapling in the middle. It's been roughly two and a half years since I wrote “How I Went From Writing 2,000 Words a Day to 10,000 Words a Day,” my blog post detailing how I upped my daily wordcount from (you guessed it) 2000 to 10,000 without adding more hours to my writing time.

Since then, the original post has gone viral at least twice (once from my site and once when it was reposted on the SFWA site), and the ebook I self published expanding on the topic, 2k to 10k: Writing Faster, Writing Better, and Writing More of What You Love, is my best selling title with 260 reviews and a 4.6 star rating on Amazon as of this writing. Not bad for a little blog post I threw together after a con! When IndieRecon asked me to come talk about writing fast, I knew here was the perfect chance for an addendum to the original post.

I’m writing this less to respond to Shetterly and more because I think there’s some good conversation to be had around RAINN’s recommendations. But I should warn folks that by invoking his name and linking to his blog post, I’m basically guaranteeing that Mr. The Rape Abuse Incest National Network (RAINN) released 16 pages of recommendations to the federal government. I’m glad to know Mr. Let’s look at the primary source and talk about what RAINN’s recommendations actually said, shall we? The paper opens with a discussion of how rape is alarmingly underreported on college campuses. “In the last few years, there has been an unfortunate trend towards blaming ‘rape culture’ for the extensive problem of sexual violence on campuses. I absolutely agree that it’s important to hold rapists accountable for their choice to rape.

But if you only write one page a day, that's a book in a year. If you can't write a single page a day, do you really want to be a writer? The essential elements of the story are conflict, crisis and resolution, and by the end of the story something should be different - either the main character, the situation, the attitude of the main character or the attitude of the reader.
