Tinkerfrog. Bella Butterfly Zig Zags for Baby by Rebecca. Several years ago I started a zig zag quilt that used rows of large triangles and staggered each row to create the pattern. I was using a directional alphabet print and I knew I wanted to be able to have the letters positioned correctly so I thought the pattern would be perfect. It used templates though and no matter how carefully I cut and sewed it just would not go together correctly. I picked and sewed and cut new pieces and sewed more carefully with no luck.
I finally figured out that the template triangles weren't symmetrical. Earlier this year, I purchased Zakka Style by Rashida Coleman-Hale and it had a bag pattern that used the same triangle zig zag pattern I'd been trying to achieve on the quilt! When I found out one of my dear friends was expecting a baby this summer, I knew I'd be making a quilt. I considered half square triangles or the rectangle method, but really, my heart was set on making a quilt the way I'd originally planned with the large triangles.

Today we have a special guest post from Lynn Harris, who writes over at The Little Red Hen, one of our favorite blogs to read! Take a look below as Lynn shows us how to make a frame purse with one of our newest collections, Piper! Ask for Piper at your favorite local quilt shop or find it online now. Hi, this is Lynn from The Little Red Hen. I was thrilled when Dear Stella asked me to make frame purses from their new line, Piper. Just look at the inspiration for this line. The purses I made have 8 inch and 6 inch frames. . - A fat quarter of each fabric (for the outer fabric and the lining) – you may want a larger piece of fabric to be able to choose your favorite sections of a large scale print. - fusible interfacing - batting or some other fleece type interfacing - purse frame - UT2 glue (I purchased my purse frames and glue here.)
There are many tutorials online about making purse frames. For the lining, trim an eighth of an inch around all sides after cutting it out.

The Botterman Empire: A handbag. A handbag?! Yes Lady Bracknell, I have made myself a handbag. This is a replacement for a handbag I made for myself a few years ago which I very stupidly left on a train - and not even in the wee hours of the morning after a night of merriment, I left it on the train on the way into work one day. Sigh. The original design came about because I saw these excellent purse frames with big bobble closures available at U-Handbag. Luckily Lisa posted a very handy tutorial about how to use them and following her pointers I drafted the pattern adding a wide gusset piece so that it would be roomier.
The original handbag was in a grey fabric with a very feint pinstripe and featured some excellent badges from The House of Ismay. Here we are in happier times hanging out in Milan... ...paired with my me-made two tone pointy flats. Anyway, that was a year or so ago and I finally got around to making a replacement. The wide gusset piece makes for a roomier bag. A long overdue, vaguely carpet-style handbag. Mofa barcelona.
