Google accounts on Twitter. Like lots of you, we've been drawn into Twitter this year. After all, we're all about frequent updates ourselves, and there's lots happening around here that we want to share with you. Of course, we enjoy watching, and contributing to, the tweetstream (we hope you find our tweets useful, too). Because there are many programs and initiatives across the company, we've got a number of active accounts. Here's a list of the current ones. Fancy Placemarks. If you have spent enough time in Google Earth, you have seen them. When you click on certain placemarks, balloons appear that feature stylized text, hyperlinks and even pictures. So how is this done?
Each placemark (or set of placemarks) is described in a KML file. Within the description of each placemark in the KML file, you can use HTML much in the same way you would if you were creating a web page. Background colors, tables, etc. According to the KML tutorial: The most important thing you need to know about authoring your own HTML in placemarks is the use of the tag. Read more about using descriptive HTML. The Next Big Language. Note: after I wrote this entry, one or two commenters speculated that I might be talking about something Google is doing. They're barking up the wrong tree: I may not be the smartest feller ever to fall off the cabbage truck, but I'm not -that- stupid. The speculation in this blog is all based on stuff I've read on the net.
It's purely my own ideas and opinions, and I don't speak for Google (nor in today's entry, even -about- Google). You'll have to look beyond Google for clues about NBL. Enjoy! People are always asking me to comment on their new programming language they're designing. And I feel bad about giving them my feedback, because I don't want to discourage them. But people are still always trying to make new languages, because we have yet to see a language that is (a) popular and (b) doesn't suck. And in a sense, he taught me a valuable lesson, although it's not the one he probably thought he was teaching me. Before I go into slightly more detail, I'll let you in on a secret.
