I read an overwhelming amount of YA books, an area where female writers are both prominent and dominant, so I had no idea of the problems facing women writers, had no clue that a problem even existed. Everywhere I looked the shelves where overflowing with female authors. So expect my soul crushing disappointment to find out that there is actually a problem. One of the most devastating things to find out was that some men won’t read a book if it is written by a woman. Jaw-dropping, I know. I have joined the Australian Women Writers challenge this year for this very reason.

I was already reading Australian women writers anyway and wanted to help bring them into focus on a larger platform, and the AWW challenge has helped me to do that. I should just head on out into the desert, lay down on a soft mattress of sand, close my eyes against the diamond sun and circling black wings. It might be preferable to this cement bed behind a Seven-Eleven dumpster. There are lots of us living on the street. There are shelters, I’ve been told, where you can eat free. But I’m afraid of the questions.

Of my soul. I stink, too. A motel room. Self-Publishing Resources | Elisa Nuckle. In March 2011, I finally decided to self publish (some) of my future novels. Eager and laughably ignorant, I journeyed through the great internet to research and snoop around for information to aid me down this rather daunting road. These are the resources I came up with, my gems. Links with an asterisk (*) are the ones I highly recommend. If you have any suggestions, anyone or anything you feel is a great and valuable resource to add to the lists, comment or email me the link and I’ll consider putting them up.

Of all the problems publishers face today, one of the thorniest is the struggle to keep up-to-date with the latest technology. Start-ups with novel ideas for content, marketing, distribution and much more. Established vendors rolling out new systems and features. And outside players coming in and changing everything with the release of a new device (read: Apple in 2010). It’s either the most exciting time ever to be in publishing or the most frustrating.
