33 Amazing Ideas That Will Make Your House Awesome

Some of us have just got to have a pool, while others want clever modern design, sustainability, or integration with natural elements. No matter what it is that makes your dream home unique, here are a few examples of homes where people have been able to realize some of their greatest home design fantasies. [Read more...] These ingenious home improvements run from pools and aquariums to cleverly-hidden storage spaces, multi-purpose furniture and… cat transit walkways. Maybe you’ll recognize something that you’ve always wanted to see, or maybe the pictures will get your juices flowing and inspire you to come up with or even build something new.

That’s why they came up with AquaFarm; it makes growing your own food as simple as feeding your fish. After a mega-successful Kickstarter campaign – $250k pledged by 4,000 backers and $150k over their initial goal – it was clear AquaFarm was a slam dunk of an idea. Thanks to this recent crowdfunding, you can now grow beans, basil, thyme, baby greens, oregano, mint, parsley, and baby greens on your kitchen counter. The secret behind the product’s efficiency is aquaponics.

It’s a combination of aquaculture – raising aquatic animals – and hydroponics – growing plants without soil. Getting started with AquaFarm begins with a trip to the pet store (this product even comes with a coupon for a betta fish!). - Wallet TrackR by Phone Halo. In case the name didn’t tip you off, the Wallet TrackR was specifically designed to address a necessary component of your daily life that can sometimes be hard to keep tabs on.

Others are great for clipping to your keychain (we featured the Hone keyfinder on Grand St. and are still very much loving it’s open-source goodness) or strapping to your TV remote, but TrackR - at about the width of a few credit cards stacked together - is the only one that fits comfortably in your wallet. That means you don’t have to go digging through every pair of pants, every bag or purse, every couch or chair the next time yours goes missing. Just whip out your phone and the TrackR app will let you know by its handy “cold, hot, hotter” system how nearby your wallet is. Still can’t find it? - Remee by Bitbanger. Remee is a light, sleek, and comfortable sleeping mask that was designed as an alternative to the rather expensive and bulky masks already on the market.

- Remee by Bitbanger

Bitbanger’s goal was to make lucid dreaming accessible to everyone. To make this goal a reality, they avoided expensive REM tracking electronics in favor of a simpler timer-based method that would minimize the size, weight, and cost of the mask. Remee does not actually detect when you are dreaming because REM detection technology is still rather expensive for sleep masks. Instead, it uses a light-focused trigger, similar to our example above, to make you aware of your dreams. Light is a universally accepted method of triggering consciousness within dreams. MindWave by Neurosky. I originally got the second generation MindWave during my sophomore year of college in order to do two things: first, make pretty fractals with my brainwaves and second, prove the point that you don’t need to drop upwards of 200 dollars to collect meaningful neural feedback.

MindWave by Neurosky

I ended up doing both and here’s what happened. Thought as Data People very rarely consider that “thought” can be collected and measured. I think a lot of people assume an EEG is some sort of mystical device, where if you think about a chair, it will do some heavy math, maybe run some special algorithms, and slowly scribble “chair” out onto the big dot matrix printer spool that all cognitive scientists use. Sadly this is not (yet) the case. I had been working on a couple projects that incorporated high-end EEGs that used between 6 and 60 nodes to gather neural output, and my curriculum, focussed heavily that semester on sensation, perception, and neuroscience, left me with a deep interest in cognitive introspection.

- aFrame by TruAudio. - HomeMonitor HD by Y-cam. The HomeMonitor HD is a stellar upgrade to its predecessor – Y-cam now offers 720p HD video in the incredibly simple-to-use home surveillance system.

- HomeMonitor HD by Y-cam

This iteration features a high-quality one Megapixel 1/4” CMOS lens with an even wider scope, covering a 100° horizontal and 71° vertical field of view. Thirty invisible infrared LEDs surround the HD lens and provide ninja-esque night vision through 50 feet of pitch darkness. Video is captured through H.264 compression and audio is picked up by a microphone on the face of the camera; the camera itself is about 3 inches tall, just north of an inch thick, and weighs a light 5 ounces (about as much as a baseball).

Check out this video made by Y-cam that goes through the cool features of the HomeMonitor. Perhaps most importantly, HomeMonitor HD is incredibly efficient. The HomeMonitor HD requires three elements to make the magic happen: the camera, the cloud, and your own portal. - Space Monkey by Space Monkey. 1TB of online storage, accessible from anywhere, anytime Anywhere.
