By Gary Hamel and Polly LaBarre | 2:00 PM May 24, 2013 For all of the books (thousands) written on leadership, individuals (millions) who have participated in leadership seminars and dollars (billions) invested in leadership development, too many leadership experts still fail to distinguish between the practice of leadership and the exercise of bureaucratic power. In order to engage in a conversation about leadership, you have to assume you have no power — that you aren't "in charge" of anything and that you can't sanction those who are unwilling to do your bidding. If, given this starting point, you can mobilize others and accomplish amazing things, then you're a leader. If you can't, well then, you're a bureaucrat. To gain a true leadership advantage, organizations must be filled with individuals who understand how to maximize their own ratio of "accomplishment over authority.

" What, then, are the attributes of individuals who can inspire others and multiply their impact? Make the most of your first 90 days! Tools I am a newbie, and i am always open to suggestions, but two of the most useful tools you'll find are Tweetdeck and Tweetchat. With Tweetdeck, you can watch mutliple conversations simultaneously, if you want.

With Tweetchat, you can follow the single conversation, and it add the tag (hashtag). Hashtags That's enough for now. See you online. Mental Illness and Leadership. Exit, Voice, and Loyalty. Summary[edit] The basic concept is as follows: members of an organization, whether a business, a nation or any other form of human grouping, have essentially two possible responses when they perceive that the organization is demonstrating a decrease in quality or benefit to the member: they can exit (withdraw from the relationship); or, they can voice (attempt to repair or improve the relationship through communication of the complaint, grievance or proposal for change).

For example, the citizens of a country may respond to increasing political repression in two ways: emigrate or protest. Similarly, employees can choose to quit their unpleasant job, or express their concerns in an effort to improve the situation. Disgruntled customers ask for the manager, or they choose to shop elsewhere. The implications of the above concept can be enormous and can allow for a new perspective on daily examples of social interaction. Applying the theory to membership organizations[edit] See also[edit] The Price of (Not) Speaking Truth to Power - Gill Corkindale. By Gill Corkindale | 10:50 AM July 21, 2011 “Are you familiar with the term willful blindness?” This was the question that floored the Murdochs at Tuesday’s parliamentary select committee hearing because it cut right through the narrative News International executives have been spinning to counter the hacking scandal that has engulfed the media group in recent weeks.

Innocent ignorance has been NI’s defense from the start. Rupert put too much trust in his key lieutenants, James could not be expected to know every detail of the NI operation and Rebekah merely delegated responsibility to her staff and relied on their good judgement. Those at the top could not be expected to know everything that was going on in NI and, besides, who could have anticipated that the work of a few rogue freelancers would undermine the entire News Corp empire? As a performance, it was neither convincing nor original. We have seen and heard it all before from leaders during other crises. Albert O. The Right Decisions Depend on “How” – 3 Things You Can Do to Help Your Team.

Almost all of us have experienced or observed a team that made a “right” decision that wasn’t effectively implemented because team members did not feel good about how the decision was made. Developing and using effective team behaviors ensures your team not only makes good decisions but also that team members are willing and able to support and implement them. And afterward, if a problem occurs and a team member is asked why the decision was made, they will take ownership and reply, “We thought…” rather than “They thought…” Use the checklist below to observe whether your team utilizes all of these behaviors. Not all people need to do all of these things, but if these behaviors are not occurring at all, then your team is losing the opportunity to make and implement decisions effectively.

Task Behaviors focus on what is needed to get the job done. They help the team find solutions, make decisions, and complete the work. Maintenance Behaviors focus on how well team members work together.
