Los Angeles: Shooting It Like a Pro Santa Monica Beach - TIME

http://www.time.com/time/travel/cityguide/article/0,31489,1844490_1861512_1861315,00.html The early morning light is beautiful at the shore, says photographer Stephanie Diani, who took this shot of the beach and the Santa Monica pier on a foggy September morning (she had to wait a while for the fog to burn off). Take the Santa Monica freeway here, but leave plenty of time — L.A. traffic is no trifle.

Apart from the Soviet writers’ prolific input into the children literature, a great deal of stories was translated into Russian, so the kids of the USSR grew up on the stories by Hans Andersen, Charles Pierrot and the Grimm brothers. Often the translators took the liberty of changing the plot of the storyline: this is how the famous book by A. Milne “Winnie the Pooh” in its Russian version features no Tigger yet there are some extra characters not from the original script. Arguably, it allowed the translator to become somewhat of an author and hence their name went onto the book cover (this is what happened to the Russian version of The Wizard of Oz). As cartoon making was one of the most developed (and certainly less censored ones) graphic arts, it can be of interest to see how the Russian animators saw the traditional Western fairy tales characters.

Relations between the former Soviet Union and the United States thawed a long time ago and we no longer live in fear of mutually assured destruction. But Russia remains an economic powerhouse and a major player on the world stage. Russia has a rich cultural history and a sometimes brutal military legacy and for most Americans, it remains the “undiscovered” country. Russia’s economy has been in a state of flux since before the Bolshevik revolution but it is interesting to note how the differences in geography, population, and the role of the military ultimately play into the entire economic relationship. A country with that many Grandmasters can’t be counted out. In order to help compare and contrast the economic differences, we have simplified the data from the CIA World Factbook and NationMaster.com.
