REKAB - Ministria per Inovacionin dhe Teknologjine e Informacionit e te Komunikimit. Kansas Fiber Network Near Completion. Kansas is getting a lot of fiber connectivity attention these days, thanks in large part to Google’s decision to build a FTTP network in Kansas City (now including the Missouri variety).
But as we pointed out in a previous post, Kansas is no stranger to fiber connectivity. The latest case in point is the Kansas Fiber Network (KFN). KFN is the latest example of an independent telco conceived and owned regional fiber network, which will span 2,600 route miles within the state, connecting rural and metro communities alike. The Wichita Eagle recently reported that the Kansas Fiber Network is almost complete, and should launch at the end of this summer. KFN is owned by 29 independent rural telcos who have invested approximately $28 million in cash and assets. “If you’re a telephone company in the far western area of the state, you’re paying $70 a meg for Internet service,” Steven Dorf, KFN’s president told the Wichita Eagle.

21 Feb 2011 Spanish fixed line incumbent Telefonica de Espana, which now offers all of its services including wireless voice under the united Movistar moniker, has announced the commercial launch of fibre-optic broadband services at downlink speeds of up to 100Mbps, ADSLZone reports.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, the operator had initially suggested that it would launch the higher speeds in the third quarter of 2010. The launch of the higher speed services follows the decision by Movistar a few weeks ago to discontinue its 6Mbps fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) product offering, a move taken to place the 10Mbps option as the standard entry-level fibre service. The operator’s new 100Mbps service, which also offers an increased uplink speed of 10Mbps, will cost customers EUR85.90 (USD118) per month, and will initially only be available to business customers.
