The European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company N.V. ( EADS ) is a global pan-European aerospace and defence corporation and a leading defence and military contractor worldwide. The group includes Airbus as the leading manufacturer of commercial aircraft, with Airbus Military covering tanker, transport and mission aircraft; Eurocopter as the world's largest helicopter supplier; Astrium , the European leader in space programmes from Ariane to Galileo ; and Cassidian as a provider of comprehensive and integral systems solutions for aerial, land, naval and civilian security applications. Through Cassidian, EADS is a major partner in the Eurofighter consortium as well as a key stakeholder in the missile systems provider MBDA . In 2009, the EADS generated revenues of €42.82 billion and employed 119,500 personnel.

Astrium is an aerospace subsidiary of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) and which provides civil and defence space systems and services. In 2009, Astrium had a turnover of €4.8 billion and 15,000 employees in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and the Netherlands. In June 2007, EADS Astrium announced it would be entering the space tourism sector. On June 20 2007 the company unveiled a model of the space jet, a one-stage sub-orbital hybrid craft, utilising both jet and rocket engines.

Astrium, Europe's leading space company, continues to prepare Europe's future propulsion technology by signing a euros 60 million rider with the European Space Agency (ESA) and its partners of the joint propulsion team consortium, Avio SpA (Italy) and SNECMA (SAFRAN Group) (France). The contract is part of ESA's Future Launchers Preparatory Programme (FLPP). The activities were started back in 2007 and have accumulated a value of more than euros 100 million.
