Spaceport America

http://www.spaceportamerica.com/ Welcome to the Spaceport America Website! The next chapter in space transportation is being written right now in the State of New Mexico. Forward-thinking pioneers are developing both vertical and horizontal launch vehicles using the power of free-market enterprise. As the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport, Spaceport America is designed with the needs of the commercial space business in mind. Unique geographic benefits, striking iconic design, and the tradition of New Mexico space leadership are coming together to create a new way to travel into space.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Spaceport America is billed as the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport. Under construction roughly 45 miles north of Las Cruces on a remote desert landscape, the 18,000-acre Spaceport America site sports a nearly two-mile long, 200–foot-wide “spaceway” that can handle the suborbital traffic flow of pay-per-view space tourists using anchor tenant Virgin Galactic and its WhiteKnightTwo/SpaceShipTwo system. A futuristic-looking terminal hangar is nearly complete, adding to the facility’s space-age ambiance. But another vibe is in the air – a “build it and they will come” optimism, but one that also has its fingers crossed for good luck. [ Photos: Spaceport America Blooms in N.M. SNC - Sierra Nevada Corporation | Integrated Mission Systems (IMS)

Overview: The SS Business Area develops high performance, innovative components and systems that are changing how we reach, explore, and utilize space. Our capabilities range from spacecraft actuators that power the Mars rovers, to hybrid rocket technologies that powered the first commercial astronaut to space, and from microsatellites controlled by the Internet to Dream Chaser ® , a winged and piloted orbital commercial spacecraft. SNC's Space Systems products innovate, enable and perform. Learn More About SS at SNCSpace.com http://www.sncorp.com/snc_ss.php

The Pegasus rocket is a winged space launch vehicle capable of carrying small, unmanned payloads (443 kilograms (980 lb)) into low Earth orbit . It is air-launched, as part of an expendable launch system developed by Orbital Sciences Corporation (Orbital). Three main stages burning solid propellant provide the thrust. It flies as a rocket-powered aircraft before leaving the atmosphere. The Pegasus is carried aloft below a carrier aircraft and launched at approximately 40,000 ft (12,000 m). The carrier aircraft provides flexibility to launch the rocket from anywhere rather than just a fixed pad. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pegasus_(rocket)

Taurus (rocket) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Taurus is a four stage , solid fuel launch vehicle built in the United States by Orbital Sciences Corporation . It is based on the air-launched Pegasus rocket from the same manufacturer. The Taurus rocket is able to carry a payload of around 1,350 kg into a low Earth orbit . First launched in 1994, it has successfully completed six out of a total of nine military and commercial missions. [ 1 ] Three of the last four launches have ended in failure, including the February 24, 2009 launch of the Orbiting Carbon Observatory mission [ 2 ] and the March 4, 2011 launch of the Glory mission. [ 3 ] The failure of the two latest launches resulted in losses totalling $700 million for NASA (not including cost of the rockets themselves). [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Antares , known during development as Taurus II , is an expendable launch system being developed by Orbital Sciences Corporation . It is a two stage vehicle designed to launch payloads weighing up to 7,000 kg (15,000 lb) into low-Earth orbit . [ 3 ] [ dead link ] It is scheduled to make its first flight in June 2012. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] NASA awarded to Orbital a Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) contract in 2008 to demonstrate delivery of cargo to the International Space Station .

The Cygnus spacecraft is an unmanned resupply spacecraft being developed by Orbital Sciences Corporation and Thales Alenia Space as part of NASA 's COTS project. It is designed to transport supplies to the International Space Station (ISS) after the retirement of the Space Shuttle . Since August 2000 unmanned ISS resupply missions have been regularly flown by Russian Progress spacecraft , as well as by three flights of the European Automated Transfer Vehicle and two flights of the Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle .

Virgin Galactic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Virgin Galactic is a company within Richard Branson 's Virgin Group which plans to provide sub-orbital spaceflights to the paying public, along with suborbital space science missions and orbital launches of small satellites . Further in the future Virgin Galactic hopes to offer orbital human spaceflights as well. Virgin Galactic uses a method with two vehicles: a 'mother-ship' in the form of a large aeroplane ( fixed wing aircraft ) which takes-off and lands like a normal aeroplane and the actual space-vehicle launches from the mothership when she is inflight giving the spacecraft a start-speed and maximum altitude from a 'normal' fixed-wing-aircraft. The White Knight One and White Knight Two are special aeroplanes functioning as mother-ship and launch-platform for the actual spacecraft such as SpaceShipOne .
