Users of all ages can create animated scenes that can be intuitively shared using social media.
Characters, both free and paid, are animated using simple gestures to move, resize, and change their position in the pseudo ‘3D’ backgrounds. Perhaps the most intuitive part of the animation process is adding dialog which is accomplished when character recording is enabled and any sound the microphone captures triggers a mouth animation. “For years, major studios have produced their own storylines and limited their licensing of characters only to manufacturers and advertisers. Now, with the Toon Hero app, people from the ages of eight to eighteen to forty eight will have the opportunity to bring these characters to life by using their own creativity and imagination,” says Shona Grundy, CEO of Trigger Happy.

Andy Robertson Chief GeekDad Trigger Happy, a VC funded Auckland company, is preparing to launched an iPad app it says will revolutionise how we related to our favourite cartoon characters. I visited the small band of developers and storytellers to find out why they have been creating such a buzz in the New Zealand press, and whether they are about to break out into global recognition. Their app is called Toon Hero and, as I soon discovered, lets you create short cartoons of surprising complexity and depth with simple controls and familiar franchise characters. By selecting a layered background and cartoon protagonists users play puppet-master, acting out the different chapters of the stories they want to tell with a range of touch gestures.

You design an avatar-like character, add a background, then type in the text or record your own voice to share the knowledge you want. Here is how it works. I start by creating a character. I can add “Emotion” to my character by choosing a facial expression. Next I select the”Background”. The character will default to the middle of the screen. I am now ready to record.
