Doctor Who Crafting. For a while now, I've been wanting to put together a little crafty care package for the dear friend who introduced me to Doctor Who. Her favorite "character" is the TARDIS. I had the idea to piece together a TARDIS quilt, and this was the result: In the space that usually says Police Box, I used fabric selvages. (My friend's name is Heather.) I wasn't quite sure how I wanted to quilt it, but I took a cue from the background (crazily pieced Goodnight Monkey fabric) and did a bunch of stars in three different thread colors. Here's a look at the stars from the back: (Plaid, since my friend also has a love for Scottish things. But wait, that's not all! Actually, it flies away in a box to its destination. Hope she loves it! Pacman Halloween garland.

By Kate on September 23, 2011 I vividly remember playing pacman when I was younger and I used to get the heebie-jeebies just before one of those little ghosts gobbled me up. Anyhow…I still think they are a bit spooky (in a friendly kind of way) so thought they would make an excellent Halloween garland. The shapes are pretty simple, so very easy to chop out. I’ve been making mine, feet up, in front of the telly. Can’t beat a bit of multitasking…haha! I’ve left my feet in this picture to give you an idea of how big the cut-outs are. Want to play pacman? How-to 1) Download the template here! 2) Lay your master template onto some black card and draw around it using a pencil. 3) Chop out (whilst watching guilt-free crappy telly). 4) For the eyes: I chopped up some scrap plastic but you can use clear acetate (I hang on to loads of stuff that would normally go in the recycling bin). 5) To hang: Get a length of black thread and stick on to the back of your pac-men(!)

Nerdy Dirty « What. No Mints? I am drawn to pretty much anything that combines science and cute. (Case in point.) Recently I came across Nicole Martinez’s “Nerdy Dirty” line of illustrations and I am just swooning … That anthropomorphic lichen is really too much. See more of Nicole’s work here. So, after my first Doctor Who-related costume ideas fell flat—I was going to be the Doctor a la Davit Tennant, but, alas, couldn’t find a boys brown suit—I decided to continue showing my TARDIS love by making a police box dress, complete with a light-up LED fascinator. For the record, I originally planned to make the dress snap down the front (with a second layer painted like the inside of the TARDIS underneath) so I could rip it open and declare “It’s bigger on the inside!”

To unsuspecting revelers. But, frankly, I ran out of time. That’s what happens when you work on too many Doctor Who projects at once. The dress is stretch cotton, and the details are eco felt appliques. Sexy might be the TARDIS’ name (seriously, it is), but I tried to avoid skank-ifying the costume as much as possible. Here’s the front view of my dress. Here’s a detail shot of the fascinator. The Zen of Making: Tutorial: Doctor Who TARDIS Phone Charging Station for Craftzine.com. Today is my birthday! (Hurrah!)
