Apple Proclaims The iPad is Delicious And More In Its Latest Commercial. RIM’s BlackPad Likely Using Custom OS Instead Of OS 6, But Will That Be Enough? RIM’s upcoming tablet might come packing a brand new OS instead of a large screen version of OS 6. According to Bloomberg, three separate sources indicated that the new operating system is coming from infotanment company QNX Software Systems that RIM bought back in April. This new system allows the BlackPad — or whatever it will be called — to have a fresh OS rather than being held back by the legacy parts of OS 6. Perhaps this news, if it’s true, shows that RIM has put a bit more work into the upcoming tablet than I previously thought. However, other details in the Bloomberg report still doesn’t sway my original opinion that the BlackPad will be an also-ran. Even a new OS won’t save the BlackPad. Previous BlackPad rumors stated that the device will be more of a companion product than a stand-alone.

Bloomberg agrees. The BlackPad will include Wi-Fi technology so it can connect to the Internet wherever the wireless technology is available, including a home or office. I pray I’m wrong. The LG Optimus Tablet Won The Internet Today. You know what? The LG Marketing VP should get a raise. Stating the LG Optimus Tablet will be better than the iPad to the Wall Street Journal won the Internet today. It is without a doubt one of the most talked about tech stories of the day, which means the VP of Marketing simply did his job. Our post on the tablet is today’s most commented story across the entire TechCrunch network. It’s Engadget’s second most commented post of the day and one of the highest visited posts on Gizmodo so far today.

The old adage that there’s no such thing as bad publicity still applies today. But that’s fine. Chances are the VP’s statement is a bit of an exaggeration. Perhaps the LG tablet is better than the iPad. Rumor: An Amazon Android Tablet May Follow The Amazon Android App Store. Okay, we know now that Amazon is on the verge of releasing an Android-based app store.

But last week, before we knew that, we got an interesting tip that such a move was coming soon — this week, actually. And that tip came with a bonus attached — the tipster also heard that Amazon was going to be releasing an iPad competitor alongside the store. Now, unlike the app store, we don’t have any further information to verify this tablet. But again, this tipster nailed the app store part of this news — and knew a couple other tidbits that turned out to be true. So it certainly seems possible that they’re right again. There have been plenty of rumors that Amazon is hard at work on hardware beyond its Kindle device. We’re digging for more information about this. [photo: flickr/torley] RIM Outs The PlayBook BlackBerry Tablet [Update: Video Demo!] There’s a lot to like here. The PlayBook runs Flash 10.1 and HTML 5 along with supporting 1080p hardware accelerated video.

There’s Micro HDMI and Micro USB connections, along with a 3MP front and 5MP rear-facing camera. That HDMI connection can even output video to dual displays. There’s no doubt that the PlayBook rocks some impressive hardware, but that’s only a small part of what makes a tablet great. Its future lies in the hands of what seems to be a totally revamped OS. Once again, this is still breaking so there isn’t a lot to go off of just yet. However, RIM did make it clear the that PlayBook is fully compatable with BlackBerry Enterprise Servers right out of the box. Of course we’re missing one very important factoid: price. One last note: why would you call the first “professional-grade” tablet the PlayBook? The New Benchmark in Tablet Performance At its heart, the BlackBerry PlayBook is a multitasking powerhouse. This Official Samsung Galaxy Tab Video Demo Is A Nine Minute, Must-Watch Snooze Fest. Juniper: Tablet Shipments Set to Reach 253M in 2016. September 26, 2011 -- By Justin According to a new report out from Juniper, tablet shipments are set to skyrocket to a total of 253M units in 2016, up five fold from the 55.2 million units set to ship during 2011. Juniper predicts that while mobile operators are just now beginning to offer up separate data plans for tablet devices, we’ll begin to see a shift where operators begin offering data plans that work across multiple devices.

So for example a user can have a smartphone and an iPad running off the same data plan and monthly bill. This concept, among others, will attribute to the surge in tablet shipments over the next five years. Most tablets today rely solely on a WiFi connections for data, but Juniper estimates that in the next five years, more than half of tablets shipped will also include cellular data. In addition, emerging markets will also help push sales of tablets with cellular connection due to lack of fixed-line infrastructure.
