The Biggest Question Facing Apple After Steve Jobs's Death Has Now Been Answered. Yesterday, Apple CEO Tim Cook fired software design boss Scott Forstall and gave Forstall's responsibilities to Jony Ive, who was previously in charge of just hardware design. The last person to be in charge of both hardware and software design at Apple was, of course, Steve Jobs. Daring Fireball's Jon Gruber says this move answered the biggest question facing Apple post-Jobs: The big news today is about Jony Ive. I don’t think it can be overstated just how big a deal it is that he now oversees all product design; hardware and software. For the last year, outside observers have been left to wonder just where the buck stopped for UI design at post-Jobs Apple. That question has now been answered: Jony Ive.

AllThingsD's John Paczkowski says this is "perhaps a good thing" and an "obvious choice" for Cook to make. It also puts a lot of pressure on the elegant Ive, who will now be the integrator of Apple’s two sides and the center of its future direction. "Forstall is a huge loss, clearly. Meet Mountain Lion: The Latest Mac OS - Arik Hesseldahl. Apple today took the wraps off a preview version of the next version of its Mac operating system software. Its name is Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, and it will be available this summer. Among the headline features are deep integration with Apple’s iCloud service, and with Twitter. And several features from iOS devices, like Messages and Reminder, are making their debut on the Mac, and will create a more unified experience among Macs, iPads and iPhones. The release, which is coming only a year after Lion debuted last summer, might just indicate a speeding up of the cadence at which Apple does Mac software upgrades.

Usually there’s an interval of 18 months to 24 months between major OS upgrades. That makes this announcement a bit of a surprise. Does that mean we can expect another one about 18 months from now? Here’s a quick rundown of the 10 new features: iCloud built in: Mountain Lion will be the first version of OS X built with iCloud fully integrated. Eben Moglen. Freedom Box Foundation[edit] Hacker News. Lost Hacking Documentary Surfaces on Pirate Bay | Threat Level | After collecting cobwebs in a studio vault for the better part of a decade, an unreleased documentary on the 2003 hacking scene leaked onto the Pirate Bay Thursday. Lamo says the film had been bogged down by conflicts among the producers and crew. “It’s ironic that a film about overcoming barriers, about new technologies, about thinking differently, had to come to the public eye by being hacked out of the hands of people who, after making a film about the free flow of information, tried to lock away that information forever,” says Lamo.

“The truth tends to itself.” Lamo adds that he had nothing to do with the leak. Lamo made his mark early in the decade with a string of brazen hacks against large companies, characterized by a flair and sense of humor that appear quaint in today’s era of for-profit hacking and multi-million credit card theft. Unemployed and prone to wander the country by Greyhound, Lamo gained the appellation “the Homeless Hacker.” See Also: Download Squad. Business Technology Videos | TechWeb TV.
