In an announcement published moments ago, the company said that it has sold 3 million new iPads since the device’s launch last Friday. That’s triple the number of iPads it sold during the same period last year, assuming analyst estimates at that time were accurate. Though Apple never released an official first weekend sales number for the iPad 2, a number of analysts said their checks suggest the company sold close to 1 million units.

Although there are a few unofficial apps in the App Store that allow you to access content from the Khan Academy, the online education portal just launched an official iPad app. Available free in the App Store now, the app provides access to the organization’s 2,700-and up educational videos. The videos cover a range of subjects from K-12 math and science to history and finance. The biggest difference between the new official app and those from third-party devs is that you can now log in to your Khan Academy account; get credit for watching videos, and track goals and achievements from within the app. The app also provides fully subtitled videos with the ability to browse by subtitle, an enhanced video scrubber, and lets you download videos and playlists for offline viewing.

Domino’s is one of the most iOS-savvy pizza companies out there and it reported last month that its iPad and iPhone apps, along with their Android counterpart and the company’s mobile website, had brought in £130,000 in orders in a single day in the UK alone. Just ordering pizzas is not enough though—the company wants you to have fun while you do it. Domino’s has released Domino’s Pizza Hero on the App Store, a free iPad game made by the advertising agency CP+B that takes you through 11 levels of making pizzas as a Domino’s employee and even lets you order the real-life version of your very own virtual pizza if you live in the United States.

The first five levels of the game are devoted to helping you learn how to make pizzas. NYT Gadget Guru Rips The Kindle Fire, Says It Needs 'A Lot More Polish' Steve Kovach, Business Insider The Kindle Fire isn't ready for primetime, says New York Times gadget reviewer David Pogue.

Other than the $200 price tag, there isn't a lot that sounds compelling about Amazon's disruptive tablet after reading Pogue's review. He says the Fire isn't as "versatile as a real tablet," and it's mostly made for consuming content. The problem with that is the Fire isn't good for content consumption. This is the nut of Pogues problems with the Fire: Most problematic, though, the Fire does not have anything like the polish or speed of an iPad. He also says Amazon's vaunted Silk browser isn't particularly fast: "nytimes.com takes 10 seconds to load, eBay.com takes 17 seconds, takes 8 seconds. The bottom line: Kindle Fire needs "a lot more polish," and it's best to wait for the Kindle Fire 2.0, which will be less buggy and sleeker.

The iPad currently reigns supreme, but can a more moderately priced, smaller device like the Kindle Fire win over gift-buying consumers? Absolutely, says consumer electronics review site Retrevo. The company polled 1,000 people in October on their tablet-buying intentions and found that, of those planning to buy a tablet, 44 percent would consider purchasing the $199 Kindle Fire instead of the iPad 2, which starts at $499. Then again, the same percentage of folks said that they didn’t know enough about the Fire, and 12 percent indicated that they would only buy an iPad. Amazon’s greatest challenge, according to Retrevo, will be convincing shoppers that the Fire is a full-fledged tablet.

Thirty-five percent of those surveyed perceive the Fire as just another Amazon e-reader. Retrevo’s findings match up with market research firm ChangeWave’s research on the Amazon Kindle Fire versus Apple’s iPad 2. iPad 3 Release Date. A report from Japanese blog Macotakara claims that Apple's iPad 3 will begin production in late January and feature a new, smaller dock connector, Cnet reports. The tablet, which will feature the same 9.7-inch screen, is being "rushed into production due to Chinese New Year celebrations" at the end of January, Cnet notes. This would pinpoint the iPad 3's launch date for sometime in March, as has been tradition for the past two years. Historically, Apple has altered peripheral ports in order to make devices thinner and in order to make room for re-designed internals.

By changing the dimensions of the iPad dock connector, the new iPad will be incompatible with all iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad accessories. Cops On The Hunt For Duplicitous iPlank Scammers. AUGUST 30--In a new variation on the “brick in a box” scam, a South Carolina woman who thought she purchased an iPad from two men in a McDonald’s parking lot discovered yesterday that the purported tablet was actually “a piece of wood painted black with an Apple logo.”

According to a Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office report, Ashley McDowell, 22, told deputies that she was approached by two black males who claimed to have purchased iPads in bulk and were selling them for $300 apiece. After McDowell explained that she only had $180, the duo agreed to sell her the device at a cut rate. But when McDowell drove home and opened the FedEx box containing the iPad, she instead discovered the wood with the Apple logo. The “screen”--which was framed with black tape--included replicas of iPad icons for Safari, mail, photos, and an iPod.

I can’t decide whether or not Michelangelo would roll over in his grave or jump for joy if he saw this app. Then again, Michelangelo would probably faint from seeing a light bulb, so who knows how he’d react to tablet applications. In any case, the Sculpt 123D iPad app from Autodesk looks like a really cool way get your hands dirty with an art form that the majority of us have no experience with: sculpting.

You start with a basic shape, like a car or a person, and then get to use different tools to “sculpt” that shape into what you’d like it to be. The app also has stamps that you can adjust and add to sculptures. If there’s something you can’t find in the Sculpt 123D library, Autodesk has that covered too. The app lets you take a picture with your iPad and then stencil in the imagery on a sculpture.

Let’s say even though you’ve taken pictures and browsed through the shape library a billion times, you still can’t find what you need for this all-important sculpture project.
