Availability of Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pros constrained ahead of redesigned models. Breaking By Neil Hughes Multiple authorized resellers this week are reflecting stock outs of 15-inch MacBook Pros, suggesting that Apple is ramping down production of existing models before introducing redesigned offerings that will largely resemble the company's increasingly popular line of ultra-slim MacBook Airs. Among those resellers reflecting backorder status on some of the current 15-inch MacBook Pros is J&R, which is now sold out of both the 2.2GHz model, which is listed as "out of stock," and the 2.4GHz variety, which is currently advertised as "on order. " In addition, Best Buy has also stopped accepting online orders for the 2.4GHz model for home delivery.

The 15-inch notebook is still available on a store-by-store basis, however a quick check of individual store inventory in cities such as Chicago and Austin similarly indicate that between 40 and 60 percent of those shops are similarly reflecting stock outs. Tim Cook FORTUNE -- Mark it down: March 19, 2012, is the day Apple took the extraordinarily normal step of issuing a dividend and initiating a stock buyback program. It is the day Apple overtly began behaving like other companies.

For weeks, I've been wondering if Apple would do something nifty with what it likes to call its "cash-balance" situation. As I noted, Apple rarely does anything the way other companies do. Not manufacturing. And yet, no matter how many times I asked smart money types and careful Apple (AAPL) watchers what they thought Apple would do, nobody seemed to have any creative ideas. It probably won’t be this small Even though the third-generation iPad was announced less than a week ago, the iPad rumor mills have not slowed down a bit. The latest whispers come from The Korea Times, which quoted an unnamed Samsung official and claimed Apple will release a smaller iPad by the end of this year with Samsung displays. The choice of Samsung seems possible, because we learned that Samsung is currently the only supplier of iPad Retina displays (as well as other components like the new A5X processor) after other manufacturers failed to meet Apple’s quality standards.

However, we are not entirely certain this project is going to get the green light. Recent reports said that such a mini iPad would have a diminished bezel more like a phone and less like a tablet. The marketing genius of Steve Jobs revolved around selling beautiful and useful things with the enthusiasm of a snake oil salesman – convincing audiences his products weren’t just good, they were “magical.”

But on Wednesday, Apple Inc. faced its first major product launch since the death of its iconic co-founder. The introduction of the latest iPad was only the second time the company’s less charismatic new CEO, Tim Cook, has stepped on stage to lead a launch, trying to whip up a frenzy of free advertising and buzz from a crowd of fanboys, bloggers and the press. In that effort, most observers agree, Mr. Cook was following the script Mr. “Nobody whipped up the Mac faithful like Steve Jobs did. That stability may be exactly what the Apple brand needs, according to marketing industry observers. At the same time, Mr. “That was one marketing message they did very well here,” said Technology Business Research Inc. analyst Ezra Gottheil. And where Mr. Apple iPad 3 liveblog. By JP Mangalindan, writer-reporter FORTUNE -- Apple (AAPL) is expected to unveil a new iPad today, thought to be named the iPad 3 or iPad HD. As with all major product releases from Cupertino, rumors have been zipping around the Web in anticipation of today's announcement.

A screen with a Retina display-like 2,048 x 1,536 resolution -- nearly double the resolution of the current model -- seems like a lock. Apple said to be considering a 14-inch MacBook Air for Asian markets.

By Sam Oliver A new rumor claims Apple is weighing the prospect of a new 14-inch MacBook Air model designed specifically to cater to the Asian PC market. Mass production of the 14-inch thin-and-light notebook may begin soon, DigiTimes reported on Wednesday. Apple is said to be considering the 14-inch screen size for the notebook because it is a popular form factor unique to the region. Currently, the MacBook Air is only available in screen sizes of 11.6 inches and 13.3 inches. There have been rumors that Apple is planning to launch a new 15-inch model of the MacBook Air at some point this year, expanding its ultraportable lineup to a larger screen size. But while Western countries prefer the 15-inch screen size, in the Asia market, 14-inch notebooks account for as much as 40 percent of sales. An illustration of Apple's notebook lineup planned for the 2012 calendar year.

Apple's next generation of notebooks are expected to be powered by Intel's Ivy Bridge processors. Is Samsung Preparing to Storm the Gaming Market? Who would have thought of Samsung storming the Kitchen Appliances market years ago? Who could have guessed that they would storm and succeed in both the Android smartphone market as well as challenge Apple's iPad?

So when a 2012 Samsung patent illustrates that they already have a working model of a multiplayer, multiplatform gaming system in the works, you have to take them very seriously. Is Samsung preparing to storm the gaming market? Only time will tell. Samsung's Patent Background Computerized games which involve the use of mobile communication devices, such as mobile phones, and a large screen, such as a TV screen together on the same platform are beginning to appear in the art. One example of existing systems is WeeWheel (or video), which is a mobile application that uses the built-in accelerometer of the mobile device to detect movement and to convert it into a joystick, mouse and/or keyboard signals for a PC, so it is possible to play games by only moving the phone.

The Wall Street Journal Is Fucking Bullshit. Earlier today, I broke some news. I don’t typically do this anymore given my new job. But from time to time this will happen. But if you read The Wall Street Journal, you’d never know. Why’s that? I know, I know. I broke the news that Apple acquired the app search/discovery platform Chomp at 4:01 PM today. This was odd both because, again, I reported the same information two hours earlier. But not WSJ. Here was the intro of the story written by Jessica Vascellaro: Apple Inc. said it has acquired app-search engine Chomp, gaining a small team of app specialists and technology designed to ease the pain of finding apps. The price Apple paid couldn’t be learned but it likely amounts to small change for the tech behemoth, which is wrestling with how to spend its $100 billion in cash.An Apple spokesman declined to comment beyond saying that the company occasionally acquires technology companies and “generally doesn’t discuss its purpose or plans.”

I did publicly and privately several hours ago. Apple Said to Pay About $50 Million for Application-Search Startup Chomp. Apple Inc. (AAPL), the world’s most valuable company, acquired San Francisco-based Chomp Inc., which helps users sort through the widening array of software applications for mobile devices. The Cupertino, California-based company paid about $50 million for Chomp, according to a person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named because the specifics are private. Apple confirmed the deal yesterday, without disclosing the purchase price. “We buy smaller technology companies from time to time and generally don’t comment on our purposes or plans,” said Amy Bessette, a spokeswoman for Apple. Chomp’s software lets people search through the hundreds of thousands of downloadable applications available for Apple’s iPad and iPhone, as well as gadgets running Google Inc.’s Android operating system.

Apple’s mobile devices lead the industry in applications, with more than 550,000 available in the company’s App Store. Apple wants to reinvent keyboards, making them even thinner. By Neil Hughes Apple could make its notebook computers and keyboard accessories even thinner and lighter with a brand new take on the classic input method.

Apple's interest in reinventing the keyboard was revealed in a new patent application discovered this week by AppleInsider. Entitled "Single Support Lever Keyboard Mechanism," it describes a handful of ways that a keyboard could be shrunk in size without affecting its performance. In the filing, Apple notes that the size of existing keyboards presents a challenge for the company as it attempts to design thinner, lighter and more attractive devices. "It would be beneficial to provide a keyboard for a portable computing device that is aesthetically pleasing, yet still provides the stability for each key that users desire," the application reads.

"It would also be beneficial to provide methods for manufacturing the keyboard having an especially aesthetic design as well as functionality for the portable computing device. " Teardrop-shaped iPhone 5 mockup: Cool or? We are fans of Ciccarese Design here at 9to5Mac, even when its renderings do not closely follow Apple’s design language. The design studio’s new iPhone 5 mockup exploits a teardrop design meme in a lovely way (and as commenters pointed out, it’s inspired by the Magic Mouse). As rumormongers are well aware, a teardrop-shaped iPhone 5 was often speculated in the weeks and months leading up to the iPhone 4S launch.

The hype was in vain for Apple’s new phone, though, that turned out to be almost identical to its predecessor (at least from the outside). With all eyes now on a rumored summer (or is it fall?) Now, do not get us wrong: We really do not think these mockups will be accurate. Additional renders are after the break. Apple Store in London’s world-famous Harrods department store opening mid-March, may signal iPad 3 launch date. In January, we broke the news that Apple plans to open a retail store inside of London’s world-famous Harrods department store. Harrods is a premier landmark with hundreds of individual shops and sections within the greater structure. The flurry of high-end brands within Harrods makes the store a logical spot for Apple to continue its string of “store-in-store” locations. Now, sources inside Harrods reported that Harrods and Apple plan to open the new store in mid-March. Naturally, a mid-March opening for the Harrods Apple Store brings up speculation about an iPad 3 launch date.

Just speculating, it is possible that Apple is opening the Harrods store in conjunction with the launch of the iPad 3. Microsoft Office for the iPad is all about the Enterprise. It appears Microsoft may finally unveil an iPad version of its bread and butter Office productivity suite. More interestingly, the launch seems timed with a possible on stage presentation at the iPad 3 event in a few weeks.

Remember when Roz Ho, former head of the MS Mac Business Unit, was a staple at Apple events? Me neither. However, the question comes up: Why would Apple, who has pushed the iWork apps for iPad since day one, want to give Microsoft a stage to showcase its competition? Moreover, why would Microsoft, who is readying its own Windows 8 tablets, want to empower Apple’s iPad with Office, thereby making its own Tablets less valuable when they hit the market …later?

Apple makes money selling hardware; Microsoft makes money selling software. This is a truth for over three decades, but is easy to forget. For Microsoft, the motivation is getting its tablet software in front of as many eyes as it can before competitors get there first. There is one other major factor: Google. Fighting Proview in Shanghai court, Apple highlights iPad’s benefits to China’s economy. An important update as a Shanghai court hearing this morning confronted Shenzhen, China-based LCD display maker Proview and Apple of California, the maker of the widely popular iPad tablet. The high-profile hearing drew more than a hundred reporters. As you know, Proview is dreaming of a multi-billion dollar settlement for rights to the iPad name in China where Apple pushes aggressively with claims it acquired the iPad trademark in 2009 from Proview’s Taiwanese affiliate for about $55,000. Associated Press this morning described a heated exchange between cash-strapped Proview, which recently filed for bankruptcy, and the Silicon Valley giant.

At stake: A countrywide import and export ban on the iPad that enjoys a 76 percent share in China. If enforced, the ban could easily disrupt worldwide iPad availability, because the world’s largest contract manufacturer Foxconn at its plants in the Chinese province of Shenzhen manufactures the tablet.
