While most environmentalists are trying to convince millions of people to change their behavior in order to stop global warming, the company Intellectual Ventures has taken a different route. The task as they saw it was to cool the Earth. The idea of convincing enough people to make behavioral changes in order to make an actual difference just seemed too unlikely to them. Instead, they have proposed an alternative way to cool the Earth. Mount Pinatubo’s eruption in 1991 caused tons of sulfur dioxide to enter the Earth’s atmosphere, causing a cloud to form above the ground.
