With -14 degree Fahrenheit temperatures and wind chill that makes it feel like it’s -50, there’s no room to mess around with staying warm. Unfortunately, I am a picky soul, and I can never bring myself to simply go to the North Face and buy a bland, puffy down coat, no matter how warm it will keep me. Not to mention the fact that my bank account cannot afford a luxury like that. Luckily for me I have ingenuity and an extensive sewing prowess on my side.

When I moved back to Chicago last fall my dad offered up his huge, heavy wool coat that he had bought from some military surplus store back in the 60’s. So with much hefting and seam ripping and combining I managed to bring together one coat, with a woolen shell and a down interior, lined with silk polka dots and orange taping (because I am not one for subtlety).

(Girl's) Leather Armor Tutorial. (Note: This is NOT dial-up friendly!) I noticed a couple of threads a while back asking about how to make leather armor, and specifically the challenges of making it fit a girl--with boobs. My family is making all the costumes of the Pevensies from Narnia (Prince Caspian Battle outfits) which are in general detailed in another thread but I wanted to have this armor tute for anyone to see and use in it's own place. What we're making here is actually a cuirass: Cuirass: (kwi-rass)—a cuirass is armor consisting of two parts, a breast and backpiece fastened together at the sides by means of straps and buckles.

What we got at the end (minus embellishments): Inspiration: Part One: Make a Plaster Mold In an incredibly messy process, John dipped strips of plaster cloth stuff into plaster mixture and covered me with them. So I just layed down on the ground for twenty minutes so it could dry in the right place. Part Two: Make a Resin Mold Side: Nymph Feather Wings from recycled materials - (with tute + pics) I've been trying to bust out my stash lately, and that included the box o' feathers.I've had a couple of old mardigras-style feather masks for years, and I was tired of storing them, so I ripped the feathers off and reused them, along with other odds and ends feathers I'd acquired over the years from nature, dusters, floral arrangements, flea markets, you name it. I love the etsy "gigi" wings ( ), but I can't shell out that sort of money. I used them as a loose inspiration for this project, although I like theirs much better!

Heh heh. Anyways, on to pics! And for the tute... You'll need - My pictures are kind of krappy, but they give you the idea..Use about 3/4 of the wire hanger (aka, snip off the hook and swirl parts), bend each to the shap you want for each side. Make hackles with the feathers with smaller on top, larger on bottom. Longer, stronger feathers should be used as the tips and will go on first. Keep glueing! Enjoy!
