Building a Raspberry Pi Robot and Controlling it with Scratch. Happy New Year everyone!

Building a Raspberry Pi Robot and Controlling it with Scratch

Things have been a bit quiet on this blog due to the Christmas rush, and the fact that we’ve been spending time on product development (more on that in a future post). But here at last is the 3rd and final post in our series on the Raspberry Pi robot we […] Welcome to the second part of our series of posts, describing the workshop we ran at the recent Digimakers event at @Bristol.

In the last post we described the outline of the workshop and looked at the hardware of the Raspberry Pi robot that we built for the event. In this post we describe the […] Last weekend we ran a workshop at the Digimakers event at @Bristol where we taught people how to program a Raspberry Pi robot with the Scratch programming language. We had a great response to a recent blog post we wrote, describing how to build a Raspberry Pi robot that you can drive around using a tablet, smartphone or PC. Update: This post is now out of date as we’ve released a new version of the software. Grej of the day. Creating Makerspaces in Schools. Two weekends ago, I attended EdCamp NYC at The School at Columbia, an independent school on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

Creating Makerspaces in Schools

One of the things I love about attending edcamps is that the day is always unpredictable because you don't know what will be discussed or who will be leading conversations until that morning. What ensued was an inspiring day focused on tinkering, exploration and innovation. A Day of Play and Exploration The day began with a discussion led by Don Buckley, The School's Director of Technology and Innovation, focused on design thinking in schools. Buckley used projects completed at The School to illustrate the various stages of design thinking, which include defining a problem, researching and creating a solution and a prototype, and implementing the solution. A culture of innovation in an educational makerspace arises from student ownership rather than from the presence of high-tech tools. Even though the map to educational makerspace success remains vague, pioneers in the field are pushing forward and reporting their findings. By most standards, New Milford High School (NMHS) in Bergen County, New Jersey, is a normal high school. Figure 1. The renaissance of learning and creativity in the library at NMHS had humble beginnings: a simple makerspace where students could learn from one another and from unscripted tinkering. The new librarian took the challenge to transform the library into a vibrant learning environment, and the principal extended immense professional freedom to adjust the space in any manner necessary to inspire students at NMHS to learn, create, and innovate.

Collaboration made easy with SkyDrive and OneNote

Now that we've discussed the basics of using Microsoft OneNote for Windows let's move on to the OneNote Web app that is part of Microsoft's SkyDrive suite. Using SkyDrive, you can access, edit, and review your stored OneNote Notebooks simultaneously with collaborators, or independently from any desktop PC and some mobile web browsers, virtually anywhere. You can access SkyDrive at Those with existing Microsoft online accounts should already have a SkyDrive. Those without will need to create an account. For this article, we'll limit ourselves to discussion of the SkyDrive OneNote features. SkyDrive When you first log in, you'll see the SkyDrive main view.
