9.3 Micro-finance institutions (MFIs): Support for Growth-oriented Women Entrepreneurs in Tanzania, 2005 (sme and poverty reduction africa)

Article Overview: Micro-finance operators in Tanzania function within the framework of the Government’s National Micro Finance Policy of 2000. The objectives of this policy are to provide the basis for the evolution of an efficient and effective micro-finance system to serve the low segment of society and contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction (as described in MIT, 2002). The policy establishes a framework within which micro-finance operators will develop, lays out the principles to guide operations of the system, defines roles and responsibilities of actors, and provides guidelines for coordinating mechanisms. http://www.evancarmichael.com/African-Accounts/1666/93-Microfinance-institutions-MFIs-Support-for-Growthoriented-Women-Entrepreneurs-in-Tanzania-2005.html

Africa - Making Finance Work for Africa

Making Finance Work for Africa takes a panoramic view of Africa’s financial systems, both at the large scale (“finance for growth”) and the small scale (“finance for all”). Things are changing for the better in African finance. Credit growth is underway after a long pause, solid new intermediaries are entering the marketplace, and the reach of microfinance is growing steadily. Finance can be a leading sector in transforming African economies—by opening up business opportunities to a wider clientele and by channeling larger resources more effectively. By providing a key alternative to government patronage as a basis for entry into business, a strong, independent financial system can transform the environment for enterprise. In addition, finance can help the poor and those in remote rural areas by providing smallscale payments, savings, and risk reduction services. http://web.worldbank.org/WBSITE/EXTERNAL/COUNTRIES/AFRICAEXT/0,,contentMDK:21224272~menuPK:258666~pagePK:146736~piPK:226340~theSitePK:258644,00.html
http://www.tzdpg.or.tz/external/aid-effectiveness/joint-assistance-strategy-for-tanzania-jast.html In an ever-changing aid environment, the international development community is challenged to better define distinctive roles and comparative advantages in order to move forward, and to remain a relevant and trusted partner in countries that they operate. The Paris Declaration (2005) clearly articulates the need for a close development cooperation and call upon development partners to support government through nationally-led economic and development strategies. The DPG in Tanzania support the Government’s efforts to deliver on the goals and targets of the MKUKUTA and the MKUZA, using the JAST’s guiding principles. The JAST is the national medium-term framework for managing cooperation between the government of Tanzania and development partners at a country level.
