Twitter Venn. Analytics for a Digital World - comScore, Inc. Alexa the Web Information Company. Alexa Internet. Operations and history[edit] Alexa Internet was founded in 1996 by American web entrepreneurs Brewster Kahle and Bruce Gilliat.[4] The company's name was chosen in homage to the Library of Alexandria,[5] drawing a parallel between the largest repository of knowledge in the ancient world and the potential of the Internet to become a similar store of knowledge. The company offered a toolbar that gave Internet users suggestions on where to go next, based on the traffic patterns of its user community.

Alexa also offered context for each site visited: to whom it was registered, how many pages it had, how many other sites pointed to it, and how frequently it was updated.[6] Alexa's operation includes archiving of webpages as they are crawled. In 1999, Alexa was acquired by Amazon.com for about US$250 million in Amazon stock[8] as the company moved away from its original vision of providing an "intelligent" search engine.

In April 2007, the lawsuit Alexa v. Tracking[edit] Toolbar[edit] Compete.com. Compete.com is a web traffic analysis service of Compete, Inc. which operates in the United States and publishes the approximate number of U.S. visitors to the top 1,000,000 web sites. This number is computed from sources including internet service providers, proprietary opt-in panels, and application service providers. Services[edit] Compete.com provides two categories of information: Site Analytics a free service, where the user can enter any domain name and receive unique visitors and Compete Rank for the entered site. Search Analytics a paid service that shows the user which keywords are sending traffic to the user's website and its competitors.[2] Compete’s panel measures U.S., but not international users.

Compete Toolbar[edit] The Compete Toolbar allows users to view the Compete Trust Scores and the U.S. Additionally, users of the Compete Toolbar have the option of participating in Community Share. Company history[edit] Compete.com has more than 2 million panel members as of 2008.[8]
