FitzBirch Crafts: Misty Morning Cowl (and Matching Hat)

I chose to knit the set in 8ply 'Denim' by Bendigo Woollen Mills. The wool already has a 'lived-in' look. Perfect for casual, everyday wear. This set is meant to be something that you throw on every morning and I wanted a very durable wool. Mothers' day isn't far away so I shall save the gorgeous lacey knits until then.

Every moment was wonderful and I loved it immensely. One thing that struck me as a little different however, was Valentine’s Day. In Australia, Valentine’s is for lovers (or would be lovers – that is, after all, the point of the day) but in Canada it was for everyone. Having never had a Valentine before, I was inundated with them and more than a little disappointed to discover they were from children and friends I had met. Not realizing just how big-a-deal the day was, I am ashamed to admit, I was a little non-plussed by the whole event. Sadie & Oliver: It's All About The Scarf. My husband's family reunion is this weekend in British Columbia ~ a family reunion we promised to attend before the fuel pump in our SUV quit, and before we realized the bumpy backroads of the last camping trip dislodged all the upper cabinets in our Itty-Bitty (aka. the trailer).

So there we are. No working vehicle to our name and a dishevled Itty-Bitty. Thank goodness for rental cars, one room left at the 6 room motel, and a sweet mother-in-law who sends gas cards and coffee cards through the mail to make our 10 hour drive a little nicer. The best part of this trip so far? It's this scarf, knit through frustration and budgeting and phone calls and re-budgeting, all with the thought of snuggling up near the campfire with my family.

And now it can be yours too, minus the frustration of vacation plans gone to pot (and then saved miraculously). Balls to the Walls Knits: Sailor's Rib Cowl. I bought this yarn nearly a year ago, I believe, with the intention of making a nice scarf for my husband with it.

But since he was never very enthusiastic about said scarf, it never got made. And then he renewed his determination to bike commute this winter and it dawned on both of us: he didn't need a scarf, he needed a cowl. A nice, snug, long cowl that he can pull up over his face when the temperatures dip into the teens and the winds are blowing. And, to be quite honest, I'm kind of amazed that the idea never occurred to me before.

Balls to the Walls Knits: Rib & Cable Cowl. With this cowl, I figured it was high time for something simple that sat close to the neck, but still had a striking design.

Hence the rib & cable cowl was born.
