No apps, no sale: iPad 2 vs. Motorola Xoom vs RIM Playbook vs HP TouchPad. UPDATE: Over on Quora we’ve been discussing the iPad vs.
Motorola Xoom in far more detail than here. You might want to read that post there, to get a more nuanced view of what the competition is really like. So, now that I’ve seen the iPad 2, see my short video above, or go and watch all the videos over on Apple’s website or view the pages of content poured into blogs over on Techmeme. We now know what the choice is: 1. No apps, no sale. It really is that simple. OK, OK, I know some of you think hardware matters. The screen resolution? The sound capabilities? The battery life? What about HP’s TouchPad? Move on to the RIM PlayBook. Anyone else out there? So, how is this next year going to play out? It’s sad, too.
iPad wins big time. Oh, and if you disagree with me and think specs and speeds matter more than apps, go check out Engadget’s comparison chart. UPDATE: the keynote of Steve Jobs showing off the iPad from this morning is now live. Adium - Download. MindNode. Return of the Blue Lego. Posted on April 9, 2010 by Grant Skinner As some people have noticed, Apple has eliminated the blue lego icon that indicates a missing plugin on the iPad.
I believe that this is a not so subtle way of shifting users from believing that the iPad browser is lacking something, to believing that the site they are viewing is broken. In response to this, I’ve created the blueLego edition of SWFObject 2.2. It works exactly the same as regular SWFObject, except it will display the blue lego icon, with a link to Adobe’s get Flash Player page on iPhone, iPod, and iPad. As of April 13, this page correctly displays content explaining to iPad users why Flash is unavailable on their device. It is released under the MIT license, and you can download it by clicking here. The blueLego art was created from scratch and I’ve included the source FLA so you can modify it as you like.
It looks like this in use: You can test it by pointing your iDevice browser to this url: Flex and Flash Developer – Jesse Warden dot Kizz-ohm » Blog Archive » Steve Jobs on Flash: Correcting the Lies. Apple has posted Steve Jobs’ “Thoughts on Flash“.
There are a lot of lies and half truths. No one will care. The article has enough valid points that people won’t check up on them. That said, here’s my attempts to correct the lies. Lie #1: “Adobe’s Flash products are 100% proprietary.” The Flash IDE, yes. ActionScript 3 runtime, called Tamarin. This street goes both ways, too. ActionScript 1, 2, and 3 are all based on EMCAScript. I’m not saying Adobe’s open sourced a lot of the Flash Player. Regarding their products, he’s wrong there too. Using a blanket statement saying Adobe’s Flash products are 100% proprietary is a lie.
Lie #2: “HTML5 being adopted by Google” Google created the first browser to fully integrate plugins, and continues to work with Adobe to do so. Google didn’t start out with Flash. Lie #3: “…75% of video on the web is in Flash. Incorrect. Not all H264 videos conform to these specs. I’ve been in web video for 7 years. Lie #4: “users aren’t missing much video.” Geo - Geocoding for the Mac.
