Enhanced image: A prototype app for smart phones matches live images of people to stored profiles and shows icons for social networking sites around their heads. An application that lets users point a smart phone at a stranger and immediately learn about them premiered last Tuesday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Developed by The Astonishing Tribe (TAT) , a Swedish mobile software and design firm, the prototype software combines computer vision, cloud computing, facial recognition, social networking, and augmented reality. "It's taking social networking to the next level," says Dan Gärdenfors, head of user experience research at TAT. http://www.technologyreview.com/computing/24639/

10 Awesome Uses of Augmented Reality Marketing

http://mashable.com/2009/12/26/augmented-reality-marketing/ Visuals are an important part of advertising, so it’s not surprising that so many companies have jumped on the augmented reality bandwagon, offering tools that visualize their products in a magical and memorable way. Here we take a look at some pretty amazing promotional uses of this new tech that work with common webcams, giving everyone a chance to experience augmented reality — a trend that will be big in 2010. This BMW interpretation ties in with a TV ad that sees artist Robin Rhode using the Z4 as a giant paintbrush (think big-scale finger-painting with the car’s tyres). Downloading the software, printing out the 3D symbol and holding it up to your webcam will allow you to see your own miniature Z4 on your screen, which you can then drive around using keyboard commands, creating your own Rhode-esque car painting.

Augmented Reality Is Overhyped and Abused - Advertising Age - DigitalNext

http://adage.com/article/digitalnext/digital-marketing-augmented-reality-overhyped-abused/140981/ As web-based augmented-reality applications have exploded, it's more important than ever to remember AR is a technology based on utility and not gimmicks. Unfortunately, as with most new and emerging technologies, it's quickly becoming overhyped and abused. Usability and user experience have been thrown under in the stampede of agencies and brands saying "Hey, look -- me too!" Even more disturbing is that most marketers are overlooking the most unique aspect of AR itself: that it's a technology that can create innovative and sustained engagement between a brand and its target consumer through utility. The real danger is that the general public is being exposed to AR through gimmicks, most of which are not following basic user experience and usability standards. I'm quite shocked at the number of brand-driven AR executions out there that require a person to download a browser plug-in or software.
Great hi-tech business card with integrated an Augmented Reality system into it. There’s not really enough space on a business card to explain yourself in any detail so I thought I’d extend it using augmented reality. I recorded a short video bio and created a 3D grid of coloured planes. These colours are updated with the those from the video. The planes are extruded depending on the level of brightness.
