What Is a Wiki

A wiki is a website where users can add, remove, and edit every page using a web browser. It's so terrifically easy for people to jump in and revise pages that wikis are becoming known as the tool of choice for large, multiple-participant projects. Somewhere, in a dimly lit classroom, a library bench, or in a home study, some lucky so-and-so is writing an essay from beginning to end with no notes. This splendid individual is able to craft entire sections without forgetting by the end what the section was intended to include at the beginning, and can weave a carefully paced argument with thoughts and references collected over a period of months, all perfectly recollected. Neither of your authors is this person.
http://infomesh.net/pwyky/ Pwyky is a ~30KB single file wiki in Python . It's very easy to install, requires minimal configuration, and uses a simple structured text format. It's free software: released under a GPL 2 licence. There's a fully functional version online for you to try. Important : you must visit the path with the full file name the first time around, so that it can install itself. From then on, visiting http://yourserver.tld/directory/ will work.

This website and the software it runs on were created by WardCunningham , a computer programmer. The content is written by editors - people like you and me. Anyone can change any page or create new pages. Read the TextFormattingRules to find out how, and then go to the WikiWikiSandbox to try it yourself. Please use the WikiWikiSandbox if you want to experiment with how editing works. If you make a page you don't want to keep, just replace its text with the word "delete".
