Scientists seek 'map of science' Researchers need new ways to monitor the progress of science in the digital age, according to reports in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Science is the most interconnected of all human activities and requires a series of maps to chart its changing landscape, the journal reports state. Knowledge has left books and libraries and is now being updated more rapidly than ever before, the authors say.

Finding novel methods to track developments could offer new discoveries too, they add. Fragmentation and reinvention PNAS carries a series of articles representing such diverse fields of science as computers, information and cognitive sciences, mathematics, geography and psychology. "Science is specializing at high speed, which leads to increasing fragmentation and reinvention," says Katy Börner, of Indiana University, US.

"Maps of publication databases or other data sources can help show how scientists and scientific results are interconnected. Data landscapes Huge effort. MOG.

ADSLguide: Broadband Speed Test. Welcome to our broadband speed testing page. To use our tester, you must have Flash installed and enabled. If you are experiencing difficulties, please read our troubleshooting section below. If you want to know what your IP address is, why not take a look at our 'What's My IP?

' page. Test Information This test is designed for users on home broadband connections. Please allow up to 2 to 3 minutes for the test to complete. Troubleshooting The speedtester uses Adobe Flash Player and if our tester does not load or fails to run we recommend checking you have the latest version of Flash installed and enabled in your web browser. The speedtester connects to TCP port 8095 using a custom protocol and also uses HTTP protocol over TCP port 80.

Please see our FAQ for advice on frequent problems like the results page not loading. If you see particularly slow speeds, and are using wireless (WiFi) we recommend connecting to your broadband router using an Ethernet cable. Rough Speed Guide. PieSpy. PieSpy is an IRC bot that monitors a set of IRC channels. It uses a simple set of heuristics to infer relationships between pairs of users. These inferrences allow PieSpy to build a mathematical model of a social network for any channel. These social networks can be drawn and used to create animations of evolving social networks. PieSpy has also been used to visualize Shakespearean social networks. This page got slashdotted on 11 March 2004, with the site getting 250,000 hits per hour. Thanks to Notnet for making sure it all stayed alive! PieSpy was presented at the Information Visualization conference (IV'04) in July 2004.
