Social Design Methods Menu. This PDF is a resource for social innovators and entrepreneurs who want to use approaches based in design and ethnography at the early stage of creating new services, projects and ventures.
It contains 11 methods including adaptable templates which use a combination of approaches from design, management and the social sciences, along with an overview of how and when to use them. The methods have been iterated in the field in particular through Lucy's MBA class in Designing Better Futures at Said Business School, University of Oxford, as well as through introducing them to social innovators and entrepreneurs including through work at The Young Foundation during 2012. Sharing this menu is an intervention into current debates about the extent to which toolkits can really help communicate practices based in design and ethnography and make them available to non-specialists. Depuis trois ans, l’association Ecobox propose aux habitants du quartier de la Chapelle, dans le 18e arrondissement de Paris, de cultiver régulièrement leur jardin. Au fond d’une impasse, l’endroit est singulier mais fédère plusieurs dizaines d’habitants. Reportage. C’est un jardin de 200m2 installé sur un parking et le toit d’un garage Sncf. Voilà trois ans maintenant qu’Ecobox a pris ses aises.
Urban tactics. Bugdet. Eco-Urban Network / Ecobox A series of self-managed projects in the La Chapelle area of northern Paris which encourage residents to get access to and critically transform temporary misused or underused spaces.
These projects initiated in 2001 valorise a flexible and reversible use of space and aim to preserve urban ‘biodiversity’ by encouraging the co-existence of a wide range of life-styles and living practices. aaa began this process by establishing a temporary garden constructed out of recycled materials. The garden, called ECObox, has been progressively extended into a platform for urban criticism and creativity, which is curated by the aaa members, residents and external collaborators and which catalyses activities at a local and trans-local level.

For Don Norman, one of the foremost design thinkers, this is the future of our domain. On November 9th, he held a Lecture at the Design Academy Eindhoven through the format of an open discussion. His main goal was to address the changing role of design, the dialogue it shares with art, and how both are implemented in education. The afternoon began with a short presentation of the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum’s Nieuwe Energie (New Energy) exhibition by one if its chief curators. As the backdrop to the subsequent open-mic debate held by Norman, this pitch talked about the changing role of design not only in contextual form but also in terms of production, sustainability, and user centricity. The potential for the slow shift into deeper manipulations cannot rely on quick cutesy references. He concluded the discussion by bringing his performative exercise to a close.
