Semester East Africa Kenya Tanzania Study Abroad -- The School for Field Studies. The School for Field Studies (SFS) Kenya and Tanzania: Wildlife Management Studies Semester program allows students to examine how land-use practices within Maasai group ranches can be sustainably managed to promote both local economic livelihoods and wildlife conservation. Students will gain a general overview of cultural perceptions, conservation issues, wildlife dispersal areas, and biodiversity conservation in Kenya and Tanzania while meeting and interviewing wildlife managers and members of the Maasai community.

Northern Tanzania and southern Kenya offer a tightly packed hub for wildlife tourism. The area is home to world-famous national parks, such as Amboseli, Tsavo, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This extremely scenic area, which is the center of tourism in East Africa, has been the home of the Maasai, Iraqw, and other groups for centuries. Above all else, SFS seeks to give back to our host communities around the world. Programs > Brochure > Office of Study Abroad. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The School for Field Studies (SFS) Kenya and Tanzania: Wildlife Management Studies Semester program allows students to examine how land-use practices within Maasai group ranches can be sustainably managed to promote both local economic livelihoods and wildlife conservation.

Students will gain a general overview of cultural perceptions, conservation issues, wildlife dispersal areas, and biodiversity conservation in Kenya and Tanzania while meeting and interviewing wildlife managers and members of the Maasai community. OVERVIEW There are many opportunities for effective conservation, natural resource management, and rural development despite the seeming negative trends on availability and quality of habitat and resources for wildlife and livestock on the Maasai steppe in East Africa. The diverse habitat surrounding the SFS camps is used by wildlife as migration corridors among protected areas. Eric L. Walters - Research. Research My research program encompasses facets of community ecology, theoretical ecology, conservation biology, and evolution. I use a variety of scientific approaches to integrate applied, theoretical, and basic research.

Methods of investigation include field experiments, long-term demographic studies, and mathematical modeling in order to understand how species interact with each other and their environment; all within a larger conservation biology framework. For ease of presentation, I have tried to pigeon-hole my research into the following broad categories. Please realize, however, that there is much overlap among the categories that I provide below.
