The Garden Slug: A hidden gem in the East | ladyironchef - Singapore Food Blog. The Garden Slug’s Waga Wagyu Beef burger ($18.90) Of late, I have been hanging out in the East almost every week. I’ve mentioned on twitter that I needed some suggestions for my list on the best food places in the East of Singapore. There were many responses pointing to the stretch of restaurants along East Coast road, with Aston Speciality and Everything with Fries among the more popular options there. But the whole area was a little hyped-up and I preferred a quieter place for a simple dinner. I’ve been to The Garden Slug previously for a food photography workshop organized by Samsung Singapore. Housed in the same cluster together with a few pet stores, The Garden Slug is somewhat like an indie cafe at Lorong L Telok Kurau. We thoroughly enjoyed the Rustic Bolognese pasta ($9.90).

The Hickory Babyback ribs ($29.0 for full and $18.90 for half rack) was bright, and hearty. Risotto looks like baby food, except that it’s much nicer. I have a love-hate feeling for the risotto. Singapore Food Guide - Singapore Restaurants, Eating Guide and R. Academy Bistro. This elegant minimalist bistro is situated on the ground floor of the new Supreme Court. We were first for lunch, but the place quickly filled up with mostly legal types in suits. Jimmy Chok, of the former Salt restaurant, is behind this operation, and it was his good reputation in fusion cookery that drew us here.

The menu comprised two and three-course set lunches, with the option to order the same dishes à la carte (all appetizers, mains, desserts). There were four starters to choose from, including a soup of the day, three mains and three desserts. A modest sandwich menu was also on offer. We chose the three-course lunch and started with a Caesar salad and sautéed mushroom with salad and balsamic vinegar. While the mushrooms were tasty and the salad fresh, the Caesar salad was disappointing with browning lettuce and tasteless dressing.

Do restaurants take pride in their reservation system? | ladyiro. When I went to Cherry Garden at Mandarin Oriental two weeks ago, I was surprised by the effort put in by the staff who called me back once in the morning to confirm my reservation, and a second time as I was slightly late for lunch. It reminded me of the excellent phone-service (for the lack of a better word) that I got from Kimberly when I was making a reservation for lunch at Sage The Restaurant. I always have the habit to make reservations, as I don’t like to be disappointed in case the restaurant happens to be fully-booked. It makes me feel appreciated when the staff answers my inquiries over the phone pleasantly, and call me back to check on the status of my reservation. Do restaurants in Singapore take pride in their reservation system? It is not my intention to cause trouble for the operations of the restaurants by making a false reservation.

This can be an one-off thing and may not fully depict the full picture about the reservation system of the restaurants. Cedele Restaurant. Good Morning Nanyang Cafe 早安南洋 at Chinatown Point. Have you tried the orange ciabatta kaya toast at Good Morning Nanyang Cafe? Baked with caramelised orange peel, the ciabatta carries a hint of citrus fragrance that works very well with butter and kaya.

It is served lightly toasted, so you have a gently crisp exterior. The ciabatta is so delicately soft, the kaya oozes out with the slightest pressure. Oh yes, I was a messy eater, but a happy one. Kaya toast is one of Singapore's perennially popular local breakfast items. For years, it's remained the same. Thin slices of ordinary bread grilled crisp. There is also the regular ciabatta toast (S$2.30).

The kaya is made fresh on the premises. Of course, we must have our drinks with kaya toast. An ice kopi like this is a life-saver during scorching weather (which we so often have). If the coffee is this good, I am coming back to try the tea. The orange ciabatta is a must try. Interestingly, this cafe also serve scones. For now, there is only one outlet at Chinatown Point. Sheikh Najib Nasi Lemak - Supper with KF Seetoh! Sheikh Najib Nasi Lemak is one of Little India's best kept secrets for a good value meal. It should be called Supersized Nasi Lemak, cos that's what the portions are like.

You get double mounds of soft, warm and lightly fragrant coconut rice with toppings of your choice. Here they give not one but three ikan kuning. We also had omelette and extra crispy fried chicken wings. Some may find the fried batter a little too hard, but crunch-seekers will be delighted. The shop is located at Rowell Road, which has some interesting nightlife - gorgeous transvestites you can gawk at admire from afar. It was K.F. Seetoh had kindly extended to a group of Makansutra forum regulars some invites to the opening of the European Union Film Festival (thanks, Andrew, for asking me along, and for the supper treat!). Supper after a movie is one of the simplest but most enjoyable things in life.

Here's Seetoh's article on nasi lemak, including this shop. Daniel's Food Diary. Wow, wow, wow!
